You could say that of 2000's punk and beyond though prior to that with most punk bands being start-ups, there wasn't really that same level of pressure to be more safe with one's lyrics. And the 80s were all about the youth pissing off their Beatles-loving parents which gave all the more fuel to punk being split more down the line. If anything considering the skin-head movement and right-wing motifs you could make a case for punk being right-leaning up until the mid-80s - that being said I chalk many supposedly 'right-wing' bands up more to teenage angst and a want to annoy their parents as before rather than real ideological commitment to right-wing ideologies. Though there are very many bands who likely did take it seriously - personally I don't think its controversial to have a right-wing take as some do, and when you see how many underground punk/ hard-core bands skew right and how many still have a notable legacy I do feel like there's this unwritten process of 'sanitising' the image of punk by turning a blind eye to what was an important part of the scene, for better or worse.
That being said the whole punk aesthetic in my eyes is a crock of shit, take it as you will. The word 'punk' means nothing and every book I've read on the matter distorts it to fit some retarded narrative 'x band did everything themselves, woah so punk!', 'y band sold out to a mainstream label and pissed off all their fans, woah they didn't care about what people thought so fuckin' punk', I mean really.
