In an ideal "we're fixing everything that went wrong in AT" world? Fatherhood. The pups don't automatically reach adulthood, but it's some kind of situation where Jake only needs to be a part-time dad. So whenever he's on daddy duty, Marceline becomes Finn's go-to adventuring buddy.
When finn chases after the sea lard, he accepts their offer to stay behind while Jake chases it. They joke a bit (what the water nymph are terrible at) before Finn tries to leave. He realises there's no way out though and the hole he came in is too high. This causes the girls to offer him to stay the night. In one of their beds.

Vault of Bones kind of showed they didn't really click as adventuring buddies, though. In keeping with my aforementioned fixing-everything, I see his relationship with FP as being more of a learning relationship, and when they do eventually break up, it's amicable and in-character. The whole time, though, the show would be gradually building and strengthening the interactions between him and Marceline in preparation for what's to come.

Simon keeps Marceline safe through her adolescence, not seeing himself really as a father for her, since he's so focused on finding his wife. Marceline keeps Simon grounded and sane more closely than she did in the actual show, allowing him to retain more of his original personality. As the years go by surviving Ooo, they realize that they're both functionally immortal. Soon enough, the idea of them being father/daughter fades if it ever did exist between them now that they're adults after a while. From there, it's the idea of her being attached to him less as a caretaker, and more of someone sharing an adventure. As time goes by and Simon loses his obsession, he sees that he has exactly what he needs right in front of him. His old love was (as far as he'd know) mortal. Long since gone. The only person either of them would have would be each other, so why not enjoy immortality together?
