Our flag actually had a tone shift around 2002 or so. The previous version had a more washed out purpleish blue. Most nations probably don't want to go around changing all sorts of physical specifications and creating inconsistencies or misunderstandings. It's not very easy and most of these flags were already "perfected" for physical display.

When I drive to work, I pass a Macedonian orthodox church with this flag on it. I think the Macedonians tried to put this as their flag after Yugoslavia went to hell, but the Greeks didn't like it.

Dumb mexismell. It has its roots in the national liberation during the battles against Napoleons occupation. It is certainly a republican symbol but I see a connection to the colours of the flag of the Old Reich.
