I can't stop watching films by Manoel de Oliveira, even though I wasn't particularly impressed by any of his films so far. But something about his movies is just pleasant and relaxing

Does anybody know why the dvd rip is 10 minutes shorter than vhs one? Bluray when

Attached: Crowd_1928_film_poster.jpg (735x1109, 377.61K)

Ingrid Bergman is a plain jane who whored her way through the industry.

do you guys have any experience in filmmaking? i was boom mic guy and lights guy in some short films, i acted in some as an extra, it was a horribly boring experience, i also did a soundtrack for a short film

currently writing two scripts (one in stand by) because that's way more fun and challenging

Buster Keaton

Attached: keaton_sherlock-e1593543876545.jpg (1137x844, 214.74K)

I'm looking to get into independent filmmaking; I've written a handful of short film scripts, including one that could be around forty minutes in execution. I've directed one short film for a contest, but it was on such a small scale (it had to be under 60 seconds) that I feel a bit iffy on calling it a serious short film. Beyond that I don't have any experience on an actual professional production, although I live in a city with a lot of film infrastructure and I'm hoping to get on as a PA when restrictions are lifted and more stuff gets off the ground.

Did some extra work. Yes, it's boring and annoying and I'm not enough of a narcissist to get of to seeing myself on screen.

They are probably different frame rates

test

what does /film/ think of Hal Hartley?

just watched goodbye to language and feel i got filtered hard yet despite that i can't say i disliked it

That one is less comprehensible than Film Socialisme imo, I perceived it as a romance in the midst of the chaos of modern life.

yeah i did get the view that the film was trying to be deliberately obtuse and chaotic much like modern life. words almost rendered broken

US hours are comfy hours, fuck euros.

Hi I'm new, whats the difference?

American spergs are still older spergs. The same two europeans shitting on Americans are no older than 18.

just watched this good, maybe even great documentary on criterion channel called Streetwise, about homeless runaways in Seattle. made in 1984.

>criterion channel
also yes, Streetwise is great

It's amazing to see how limited his perspective is now after having liked his videos when I was just starting to seriously get into film. I was rewatching Branded to Kill recently and in the scene by the bunker where the car is being shot at I noticed that Shishido shoots right through the windshield and it doesn't break, and that in the context of the film I really didn't give the slightest fuck about that, but I know if YMS saw that he would sperg out about it even though strict realism is so clearly not one of the key focuses of the film.
His criticism of The House that Jack Built was so ridiculously ignorant of the actual intentions of the film, I don't get how you could think that he was trying to make a conventional suspenseful drama when every aspect of its structure is designed to give a degree of Brechtian distance from the action.
I think it makes sense that The Holy Mountain is his favorite movie, maybe my opinion will change on a second viewing but The Holy Mountain struck me as the ultimate midwit movie, a mile wide and an inch deep. I don't know if there is a single visual concept or metaphor that isn't incredibly obvious and didactic enough to understand on first viewing. Artificial body parts as a critique of vanity, religious symbols on guns, the commercialization of the image of Christ, everything is as self-explanatory as a newspaper cartoon. It feels like a movie made for people who want to consume something that requires the bare minimum of effort to understand, placing it a step above absolute shlock, but with nothing that is fundamentally challenging that could be analyzed at a level above their capacity.

>Good lord, he has no talent or imagination.
Not all of his experiments are successes, and A bout de souffle unfortunately takes up a lot of attention for its historical importance despite it not being remotely one of his best films, but this is a fucking sophomoric take. There are films of his that have bored me to tears, but Le Mepris, Alphaville, Pierrot le Fou, Weekend, etc. are kino; acting like he's just a hack is nonsense.

Does it have a perfect script?

Attached: Double_Indemnity_(1944_poster).jpg (1948x2937, 1.94M)

For Ever Mozart isn't supposed to be 'entertaining.'

Haven't seen it yet, the only post-sixties film I've seen yet is Film Socialisme, but I've seen most of what he made before that.

It's a bigger filter than Film Socialisme

I didn't "get" Film Socialisme but I don't think I was filtered by it, I like the visual experimentation but I will definitely need to watch it more than once before I can say anything intelligent about it. Before then I'll try to go through more of his in between work chronologically. A lot of people here have talked up his eighties and nineties period, the memes from the summer have definitely gotten me intrigued by King Lear, Histoire du Cinema, etc.

80s-2010s Godard is great, his 60s stuff is kind of childish. I've never seen his Vertov 70s films.

I was bored to tears watching Le Gai Savoir and I'm kind of dreading the Dziga Vertov Group films; I'll give them a chance but from what I've read about stuff like Un film comme les autres and British Sounds I'm anticipating a rough time.

Adam from YMS is one of those "cinephiles" who are super snobby and obnoxious about their hobby. His podcast sucks because his co-hosts are just enablers who suck his dick all the time. When Adam was lecturing them about the meaning of the new Charlie Kaufman movie (which he obviously got from googling articles about it), they were in awe and worshipped him for his knowledge. And when Ralph disagreed with Adam about Isle of Dogs, Adam just yelled at him for being wrong and not getting it. He even told him "I'll explain it to you later", basically giving Ralph detention

>his 60s stuff is kind of childish
This doesn't make it bad though.

He barely watches movies from before the 2000s and knows nothing about film history. He thinks Citizen Kane was the first movie with a narrative structure.

AMA

what are some must see films from the golden age of hollywood(40s-60s)?
i want the cream of the crop. i just watched rear window for the second time but first time over the age of 25 and now i think im old enough to "get" hitchcock

>youtubers, Godard bad
Glorious US hours

Name the films or go fuck yourself

I admit it's bad. At least im not an American though.

There's one euro faggot who compares Godard and Rivette to the likes of Bresson. Yikes. Dumb brain.

He was American and Rivette is kino so nothing wrong there.

Calling you out. What makes you think Rivette has artistic merit?

Seeing his films. Now say what's wrong with his film or stop wasting time.

well, Paris Belongs to Us. Too much atmosphere, not enough plot. That movie was a cloud of dirt and dust.

I thought it was interesting in this movie how he as a poor kid and his friend as a rich kid both basically did the same things (apart from him being pinned with stealing the typewriter) but the poor kid suffered actual consequences and the rich kid was able to just keep skipping school at will.

Of course I heard the parts where the kids are running around and goiing to the movies were semi-autobiographical so that might be reading too much into things

Attached: 400blows.jpg (1288x1600, 194.26K)

That's his first film. So you have only seen his first film?
>not enough plot
Ngmi

im the guy you're responding to, ignore that troll.

no, i have seen more of them and have actually thought about it, unlike you the vacuous snob

>There are still people dwelling on FNW newfag shit

Rivette had the kino eye.

Cope

>Rivette

I bet you think Oshima is the height of the medium

Rivette is too accessible. Same with the gook. Some films are just too easy to interpret.

Who is not too accessible?

>list directors
>shit on them because you dont understand the depth in them
>you can only make surface level judgements
Cheeky little euro.

>copes some more
As expected

That isn't me. I think Rivette is great, but too easy to understand.

The last film I saw was on February the 12th. I'm finally beginning to feel emotion that others feel. Keep going?

Cope. Now answer the question, who is not easy to understand?
What emotion

After too many films they all become nothing and you feel a lack of emotion and relatability. Nowadays im beginning to relate to other people, and im thinking back to the first time I saw basic bitch films.

expired, can you send it again fren?

I'm genuinely curious my friend. I think it's the least formally and emotionally interesting film in his filmography, so I'm curious as to why people seem to love it so much

Fix film by removing all women from the general

incel

Attached: fay wray.jpg (1273x1600, 247.87K)

I think it's more restrained and less extravagant than the other ones but that's not a bad thing, there are still several extravagant moments like Deneuve's crash or the first montage. Some parts of the film are more gritty similar to what he did in Lovers of the Bridge and it works well for the film. It has very specific strange and enigmatic atmopshere that's different from his previous 3 films. The scene where Pierre follows Isabelle into the forest is kino, so is the sex scene. Emotionally it's well handled, journey of a young man who has everything but is trapped so he attempts to venture out and free himself while helping somebody, yet he ends up getting trapped again in a different way leading to (self)destruction. Also the soundtrack is kino.

Fair enough, I mostly agree with what you're saying but I just didn't find it as emotionally engaging or "cinematically" interesting as his other films.

ngmi

>NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO YOU CAN'T JUST HAVE DIFFERENT OPINIONS THAN ME!!!! FILTERED!!!!
Kill yourself retard

Yes, the film is not for everybody. Annette should be more extravagant since it's a musical.

Why do we pretend to hate Korean Cinema? Is it because of the weab of this thread?

Metropolis
Clockwork Orange
Blade Runner
La Jetée
End of Evangelion

People hate it here because it is now popular in the West and "too bloody".

Acting mostly sucks.

>Do you believe love can bloom on a battlefield?

Because its main appeal is le epic twists and turns and shock value. If M. Night Shyamalan was korean people would tout him as a "VISIONARY AUTEUR GENIUS". That being said, I don't hate Korean cinema, I just don't view it as the peak of cinema letterboxd nu-males and women do.

I love Billy Wilder and Noirs but double indemnity never clicked for me

Large amount of it is schlock. No different than Hollywood schlock like Nightcrawler.

greetings, fellow patronfags

post highest rated directors, i cant do actors because my highest rated are all literally whos that were seemingly in every kurosawa movie
need to watch testament of orpheus to see if i can get cocteaus score down as i wouldnt consider him GOAT like my stats suggest, feel like a pleb that kurosawa is number 3 too and gilliam wouldnt score so high if i rewatched and rated all the python stuff

>Selena Gomez
>39 films
is she even in that many films?

lol thats because i gave die hard 5 and predator 4 stars

yeah mine are a work in progress too, theres always more films to be watched

stop dramatising banal internet discourse, go dilate

yup if you watch a lot of american films then most watched is just confirmation that yeah deniro, sam jackson, michael caine, seth rogen etc are in a lot of movies

Yeah, 41. Two unreleased still, and one is very HTF. It’s not online anywhere that I could find, and only got a dvd release in an absurdly priced box set here in the states.

>Dolan
Yeah I know, but I thought Mommy was great. The only other film I've seen by him was It's Only the End of the World, which I rated higher than I should have just because it was generally disliked on letterboxd

I'm guessing she's your waifu then. Why won't you pay the price to watch everything she's in? You do love her, don't you?

A film is either a period drama or bad.

>stop dramatising banal internet discourse, go dilate
Stop being a fag then. Make one of those sad letterboxd threads where you and other insecure and vain retards can desperately seek validation by one-upping each other by watching obscure films

I'm loling at you

>where you and other insecure and vain retards can desperately seek validation by one-upping each other by watching obscure films
so /film/?

I buy/sell films online. It’s a pretty good market. At some point I’ll find the box set cheaply in person. Just a waiting game right now.

and ofc SelG is my waifu, she’s a literal Goddess

>/film/
>obscure films

>feel like a pleb that kurosawa is number 3 too
dont fall for the meme. this place is not real

Agree wholeheartedly on the holy mountain, on second viewing all of the symbolism became offensively obvious

this list raises too many questions in my head

Unfortunately this is what it often turns into. Which is why I'm in favour of having that letterboxd general running so all the fags fuck off there

Ask away!

>on second viewing
So overall it can't be that offensively obvious.

But is that inherently a bad thing? Does everything have to be shrouded behind five layers of meaning? I think the film conveys its message effectively and in a way that isn't laughably unsubtle

sorry, what do you want to talk about? boy its a wonderful life sure is kino, hey you guys seen 12 angry men? its pretty kino! oh god apocalypse now is the most subversive blockbuster ive ever seen, is coppola a genius? major kino alert! 2001 a space odyssey? you better believe thats a kino!
please no one discuss anything beyond my attention span, imdb top 250 ONLY

Should rename /film/ to /insecurepseuds/ tbqh.

Case in point.

you can discuss that on separate threads or reddit

Having a genuine discussion about "obscure" films =/= Having a dickmeasuring contest over who has watched the most Kyrgyzstani New Wave
Because of retards like you there rarely is any real discussion here, just infinite screeching of "filtered". Could it be because you can't actually comprehend the medium of film because you view them as baseball cards meant to be collected?

No, please don't mention anything obscure here. That makes you automatically a pseud.

sorry

its a real headscratcher that a thread for cinephiles that have likely seen all the mainstream classics would discuss and recommend obscure and overlooked movies, what an unexplainable sequence of events!

this is exactly the type of hilariously obtuse dichotomy that I'd expect from someone who spends their time trying to feel superior to others by watching the most obscure movies they can find and declaring them their favorites while shit talking classics
this site just gets younger and younger, I thought it was bad years ago but boy...

Anyone here seen The Clockwork Orange?

wont find me badmouthing popular classics, wont find me pissing my pants crying over obscure movies either.

i suppose the difference is i can appreciate both whereas you have some sort of complex because people who arent you are watching less popular movies lol

you're not impressing anyone with your obscure movie knowledge, not watching that british BS my dude, gonna rewatch Band of Brothers keeping it 100, buddy

/film/ is a Michael Curtiz general

Attached: Dodge City 1939.jpg (650x1000, 92.73K)

What's the least popular /film/?

Steel Magnolias

Can you read, buddy?
>Having a genuine discussion about "obscure" films =/= Having a dickmeasuring contest over who has watched the most Kyrgyzstani New Wave
Since it looks like you need it spelled out for you: there is nothing wrong with having an actual discussion about "obscure" films. But >"g-guys please follow my letterboxd I have Kurosawa high on my most highly rated directors but i wish i didn't because i'm insecure and tailor my tastes to whatever is the most obscure so i can feel a false sense of superiority, please guys don't call me a pleb"
is not discussion. If someone has something interesting to say about some Hollywood trash like Christopher Nolan or Spielberg, I would rather read that than 300 posts of FNW director rankings and replies of "filtered" when someone didn't like the same movies as you

You mean you don't use knowledge of obscure films as a way of coping with your crippling insecurity and lack of personality?

glad to find out you're the 1/100 exception. how convenient, especially since we found out only after calling you out
>whereas you have some sort of complex
yep, just as I thought, the usual peabrain dichotomy that movie elitists always trout out, with a healthy serving of projection on the side.
you just couldnt stop yourself for even one comment... the "b-b-but I actually appreciate all" was just a facade afterall.
I mean, not that the liking obscure movies isnt also a facade too, but you get what I mean... or maybe you dont, since you dont seem to bright, reading comprehension wise

Horror and Hamsters

i think your mom needs to limit your computer time, say dichotomy more lol

He's done you.

dichotomy

I'm not the user saying "dichotomy" but seems like his posts struck a nerve. I'll now give you some serious advice:
Stop watching films because you think they gift you some intellectual merit on a chinese basketweaving imageboard. If your exploration of the medium of film is based on treating them like Pokemon cards you need to add to your collection, just stop watching films. You will never understand them beyond a superficial level, and much more, you will never actually gain anything from watching a film.

Which Selena Gomez movie is the hottest? Got to be Spring Breakers, right?

Attached: gomez-pre.png (502x1591, 978.33K)

projecting pseud

I just see the anti obscurists making lots of incorrect assumptions that I'm sure it applies to some if not many letterboxd users but you can also just have broad taste .

Korine made them look bloated and disgusting, that was an anti-coomer film.

Well which movie one is it??

what are you even bitching about? Did you give some capeshit a 5/5 and were unable to defend it. The only one that is insecure is you. I bet you think stuff like Visconti or Rivette is 'obscure'
Also, lol if this is Turkpleb who I had liked until recently.

Personally, as the waifu guy, I think her best looks were in The Dead Don't Die. She was not in it fully tho, which sucks, and anyway the movie blew. She also looked fantastic in A Rainy Day in New York, The Fundamentals of Caring, and A Love Story.
Spring Breakers is an obvious choice as well. It is my favorite film of all time desu, but that was the movie that turned me onto my love for SelG. So it holds a special place in my heart.

Link?

You have some serious personal issues that need to be worked through before it is too late and you start fucking manikins and killing dogs.

>Selena Marie Gomez (/səˈliːnə ˈɡoʊˌmɛz/ sə-LEE-nə GOH-mez; born July 22, 1992

Stop pretending to like my waifu before I kill you.

Shut the fuck up faggot you sicken me

God /film/ has gotten bad, how do we keep plebs and schizos out of here? Seen a sharp rise in mentally unstable posting recently

Nice. But for me she just looks like every standard Latina thot type girl you find in the US west (also seems to have the same personality as them too). Maybe if you are a Euro I could see the appeal of her.

Kys or make a selena thread on Dab Forums

I'm latino myself (50%), in the US, living in a highly latino area (mostly domincans and mexicans). ;^)

What, am I interrupting you retards talking about your gay little personas?

/film/ will die in a few weeks, it's been shit since the end of new years

Americans woke up

No, you are shitting up the thread with garbage.

But the 25 posts about y'alls faggy personas isn't shitting up the thread? One complaining about shitting up a /film/ thread is like complaining about poop in a toilet.

It has its ups and downs, it was abominable in the fall after the Han Ye posting died out but eventually got better. The ratio of actual conversations getting off the ground to schizoposting has been pretty bad lately.
There was some talk a while ago about having a regular schedule of films to watch so we can talk about them while they are fresh in everyones minds, is anyone still interested in that? We might be able to have more substantial conversations on a regular basis.

American hours were much comfier than Euro gatekeeping last night. KYS Pleb Eurostein.

Where do you see personas? The worst posts were some letterboxd accounts.
>y'alls
Kill yourself, looter

>There was some talk a while ago about having a regular schedule of films to watch so we can talk about them while they are fresh in everyones minds, is anyone still interested in that? We might be able to have more substantial conversations on a regular basis.
No that was the gayest thing I've heard in my life and the reason we keep telling retards like you to go to Reddit.

>noooo not the gatekeeping please talk more about YMS (which you can do on Dab Forums with 300 posts), pleaseee talk about my youtubers
Shut it, rabbi

This IS the Selena thread user.

As a Euro myself, I can say the Euro hours are truly the shittest.

Calm down ladies, no need to throw a tantrum.

Then you are delusional. Enjoy talking about youtubers.

Link

trust, unbelievable truth and henry fool are great an the redhead girl in them was an amazing actress, simple men was good, the rest he's just repeating with less success what he's already done

You sicken me I bet your stupid face has glasses and you look like an incel. I bet you had a phase with a moustache and looked like some gay incel pornstar. I bet you sip on Mountain Dew all day and shit your pants from eatting too much fatty foods. I bet you wear gay ass sweaters and have some Game of Thrones type chair to post your faggotry on faggot ass bitch boy.

amateur was also good forgot to mention it

I'm Euro as the next guy and gotz to see American hours are better. DESU the spamming is funnnier, and the posters are more based/calm. Euro hours are pleb larpers gatekeeping.

Please someone invite me to a discord without people like this

>Enjoy talking about youtubers
Or about nothing at all, since burger hours often don't even have a thread.

It's either no thread at all, entire thread littered with one guy spamming all the time or banal posts like Godard bad, Bresson bad without any discussion at all.

/film/ is infested with insecure plebs who want to be a /film/ poster but aren't willing to watch the /films/ and want to drag us down to their level. Fuck off and let us have our thread

Hey guys, Gérard here.
Doing a quick AMA on my favorite Dab Forums board thread.
Ask me anything!

/film/ should be renamed /pedo/ tbqh

the most hyped korean films come across as prettier more refined versions of movies that already exist. i found parasite underwhelming for instance since i'd seen la ceremonie like a week earlier and it's a better film, the comedy less on the nose and the director less clumsily superficial in his critiques of classist attitudes

There are plenty of comments on letterboxd with La Ceremonie that go like this: La Ceremonie walked so Parasite could run. Imagine thinking that.

i cant go on letterboxd my browser is too old

why?
/film is /film/

...

where can i find 'Rerberg and Tarkovsky' online? please

my daily vlogs

I wish
