Fully agree, warts and all. It doesn't have to be perfect for it to be the greatest of all time. No other show has come close to doing to being so epic, let alone with a huge ensemble cast, sci-fi oddities and an original, legitimately spooky smoke monster. Even though they didn't stick the landing with the finale, it's still the goat for all that they did right, and for the fucking attempt.

I liked lost, but Carnivale was airing at the same time and was infinitely better and had more quality writing. It also respected the viewer , was talking about deep metaphysical and moral issues as being central to the conflict in the show. Lost on the other hand selectively picked one issue or moral conflict, spammed you with flash backs and later moved on to the next. This made Lost kinda shallow, there were mysteries upon mysteries with no pay off to drag it on. It was a victim of its success, Carnivale on the other hand got cancelled because of dumb audience. If it was made today due to the popularity of streaming, it would have become a massive success.

Ruined itself trying to make too many twists and controverted plots, and ended up giving it the most half assed, disappointing, shit explanation possible summing everything up to good vs evil. There was no reveal or solution to the mystery that would be satisfying enough to make up for 5 seasons of hype. This show is the TV equivalent of a pump and dump stock.

If you're talking about Jacob and MIB then I don't see it that way. The mother was selfish and manipulative and when MIB left she killed all his people. Jacob was naive and loyal to a fault, turning MIB to the smoke monster and although he ultimately let his successor choose, they were brought onto the island against their wishes and a lot of people died needlessly in his game.
Jacob and MIB are more akin to life and death than good and evil. Jacob represents life, which is why he heals and can stop aging, but its also why he's naive because life is associated with youth. MIB represents death which is why his powers are destructive and why the smoke monster was associated with Annubis by the Egyptians who dwelled on the island. Just as life is associated with youth and innocence, MIB is jaded like an aged person who's seen too much.
LOST never paints life as pure good and death as pure evil, they are supposed to be balanced. Its also implied that the life and death were one once, as the mother had the powers of both.

The way MIB taught Jacob play their board game was put in as reference to when Locke taught Walt to play backgammon in season one, as Locke would become MIB and Walt would become the new Jacob after Hurley. Walt also has the power of precognition which is usually asociated with chosen people, and Locke also chose to leave Walt on the mainland going back to the island, because it wasn't his time yet.

Faraday would unironically be the best protector of the island imo. He was the only candidate that had the potential to harness the electromagnetic energy of the island in a safe and measured way. With the gift of eternal life, and being immune to the direct exposure to the heart of the island, he'd be able to bridge the gap between science and magic to create a utopian futuristic civilisation on the island that's entirely self-sustainable on electromagnetic-energy. Not saying it would happen, but it could.
Compare that to anyone else who'd probably run the island pretty much the same way because they don't understand the island anymore than anyone else.

As for the latter, it's just my headcanon but I think the future of the island would be far more interesting under the leadership of someone who's smart and scientifically ambitious like Faraday. A mystery show should ideally leave some things unanswered so that the community and individual fans can continue to enjoy speculate several years after the show has ended, in threads like this. Many people enjoy theorising for its own sake, myself included. I understand why it would piss off people who dont enjoy theorising but those sorts of people should know better than to waste time on mystery shows because they're always going to set themselves up for disappointment and throw shit at other people rather than admit their own naivety.
