I don't think it's too bad. The biggest issue with space is simply the lack of political will. The engineering problems with getting us into space and the Moon are pretty straightforward, they just require tons of money and quality assurance. We went to the Moon in the 60s. Space is hard, but not complicated if that makes sense. Haven't seen the new episode yet though.

The Soviets sent a woman on the moon so the US felt forced to do the same and more women got inspired to get equal rights and study STEM or something
