As for this, Asano's art is good, and the backgrounds work fine with it, but I wouldn't hold them up as anything special. It's at about the same level as highering a poorly paid assistant, or throwing together some digital shit with assets and then drawing in the rest. It's not terrible, but it's lazy.
This is a better example, expressive, good anatomy, well framed, overall high level art. If you're going to brag about an author's art don't post a page where he didn't draw 99% of it.

Dorohedoro has some of the best gritty art out there. In terms of communicating a grungy and broken down setting I think its roughly unmatched.
Dai Dark is pretty good in this way, but the setting is less conducive to this kind of look given that most of it is on utilitarian space ships.

user, I don't think you understand my point. His character art is good/great, his backgrounds are LAZY because they're pictures. I never said he couldn't draw, I said he doesn't. And, he can be criticized for that. I think that generally the backgrounds work well with his art, but as far as BACKGROUNDS go, they're close to bottom of the barrel. You can (and will) see amateur entries that use the same technique. If you wanted to make Asano backgrounds, it wouldn't take you more than a day to learn how, and a week to become very very good at it. Here's what real top 10% looks like
Of course, maybe it loses its charm once you realize it takes 10 minutes to do, but when I look at this I see good character art over a photo. It works fine, but the background itself sucks, and it's lazy. I'd prefer a real background, it will look better every time.

Yes if I had to choose between Blame's backgrounds and Punpun I would probably choose Blame most of the time, but I still wouldn't dislike Punpun's backgrounds because at least for me most of the time they look good, I admit it tho a lot of times is really evident the contrast and you can easily notice that it is a photo.
