To begin with you shouldn't expect a sexy show since there's barely any fanservice, unlike what fanart might lead you to believe.
As for what the show actually is, it's a mixture of Evangelionesque character drama, 90s tokusatsu and Masami Obari mecha, with some more traditional Trigger-ism sprinkled here and there.

Great opening episodes then about 2 or 3 meh ones then a great ride till the end.
