I wanna know something before I get this game.
How viable is ranged combat?
Is it possible to go through the entire game by using ranged combat only?
Are there other forms of ranged weapons that arent bows?
Like crossbows/throwing axes/throwing javelins?
Pls respond

yer man you can throw spears to one-bomb deer
>How viable is ranged combat?
It's too good for its own good.
But there's no variety.
Just bows and better bows
>Is it possible to go through the entire game by using ranged combat only?
Yes, But there's a boss strong against bow, so you will need to burn 10x time and efforts to kill the boss if you're not gonna go with its weakness.
>Are there other forms of ranged weapons that arent bows?
None.
>Like crossbows/throwing axes/throwing javelins?
Yes, You can throw spears, but it's not a viable form of attack.
You will need to retrieve it after throwing it, and the damage is not that great either.
Can I make a stealth archer?
Yes. You can stealth and there are crits.
Yes
> 2 million copies sold allegedly
> Yet not a single english youtube video with 1m+ views
>How viable is ranged combat?
You can take down trolls with the basic bow and the shittiest arrows, all you need is patience, dodge rolling, and keeping an eye on your stamina. Bows have massive drop but they're the best hunting weapon, they're amazing for killing the ent boss, and if you have a friend to tank/kite anything you can just go full DPS
>Just bows and better bows
Arrow, flint arrow, metal arrows, cold arrow, fire arrow, etc.
>youtube views a lot
>It's streamers youtuber shilled marketing viral game!!!
>youtube views very less
>Complain anyway
fuck you retards
you can throw a spear
Yeah, and just like he said, it's not viable. You huck a spear in a trolls ass and then you're out a spear and the troll has a new toothpick.
HEY GUYS, DID YOU KNOW THAT VALHEIM IS SUPER COMFY? IT'S REALLY COMFY! COMFY IS THE BUZZWORD WE DECIDED TO USE FOR THIS SECTION OF OUR MARKETING, SO ENJOY THE COMFY GAMEPLAY OF VALHEIM, ALL YOU FAVOURITE STREAMERS ARE PLAYING RIGHT NOW! AND IF YOU PLAY, WHO KNOWS YOU COULD END UP PLAYING ALONGSIDE YOUR FAVOURITE STREAMER!
i dont like survival but 3 more friends are getting it and starting this weekend so ill tag along its only 20 bucks. hope its better than fuckin ark hate that game
Awful, awful english. How much does china pay you to shill for games
It's an okay game. Mods will make this game a thousand times better. My only hope is that we get some Terraria themed mods;
>Increase Stack Size
>Increase Inventory Size
>Separate Inventory for Equipable items
>Increase Carry Weight / Infinite Carry Weight
>Stamina only for Combat
>More Bosses
>More Biomes
>More base building tools
>More Monsters
>More weapon variety and weapon animations
>more RPG mechanics
If it makes you feel any better I fucking hated Ark too, but I've been coaxed into buying Valheim by a mate and it's actually not that bad
It has potential, but I hope they don't just drop it after 2 or 3 updates like so many FOTM early access survival games
Why does it look worse than fable 1 on xbox
It's different. You can pick up the game for free and try it, last I saw it was 1.435 or something like that, so you won't be able to play online I guess (unless you can with other people at the same version?)
I don't think you will like it though.
Increase stack size mod exists on Nexus. The others I don't think do yet. Given that mod support won't be official, I wouldn't hold my breath.
He's not playing on max settings, thats for sure.
I think it has a good base but its clearly unfinished
And I mean obviously it is since its early access, I hope the stuff that gets added in is as good as whats already there
This is why you have no friends to build a long house with.
It's meant to look kinda 'retro' I guess is the word. Personally it's one of the few things about the game I truly like.
>Given that mod support won't be official, I wouldn't hold my breath.
Well, if I could return the game, I probably would. The game is okay, but mod support is what would make this game truly amazing.
>game is said to be toaster-friendly
>runs like ass on my toaster
Welp, guess I'm skipping this one.
It is toaster friendly, assuming you use a beowulf cluster of ps3s to cook your jaffles.
>I think it has a good base but its clearly unfinished
Sure. And if the updates that are supposed to come are good, it will be better. But even then, it could use more content. Mod support would make it infinitely better.
I mean, there is modding being done since it is a unity game. But I can't say for sure that we will see anything the likes of additional biomes being modded in.
With Adv.Building (mod), there's definitely a lot of promise considering you can port stuff in through schematics.
Unfortunately, I don't know enough about modding a unity game to really say what you can and can't do without official support, but I do know the scene will take
significantly longer to actually become more than tweaks to stats in game.
>people build massive castles, docks, entire towns, while I can repair a broken lean-to
I'm a fucking NPC. That's what I've realised. I've got the creativity of stunned tortoise.
Wow !
Jesus Christ, user. How high is your house up? How'd you support it?
Bow combat is incredibly tedious and non rewarding. It takes like 3 fu seconds to fully draw your bow. You'll end up wanting to use melee as well just because it's faster.
Imagine that small scale streamers are pushing content because they are irrelevant. They get their autist survival crafting fans hyped and now we have a valheim bubble. That's what's happening. Its not a good game
As high as I can get while still being next to the ocean.
>How'd you support it?
A very, very large rock I found. I built scaffolding to get to the summit, cut off the head of the rock with my pick, then built my tower. Deleted all the scaffolding and built a portal to the top being the only way up. The Portal in the picture below is the only way to get to the top.
The base below is where I hold all my other portals and do crafting and farming, which has also been built on a bizarre cliff rock face area I found which is impossible to get up without portals unless you build another large staircase. I take a portal from there to a an island which is where my first base is located. Only way there is by boat.
I don't have the tisms. I just like building secret secure bases.
Not him but since he's in plains I assume he built his house on top of a rock pillar
>i cant build the top of a roof properly for shit because i cant properly level the fucking ground
>thats actually a benefit because of the fact that i can die from the smoke inside of my house IF i actually had the top of the roof cover
>mfw my own low iq actually saved me
Are there slings in the game?
No
>huh this game looks pretty cool
>lets see Dab Forums talk about it
>oh yeah, sounds alright
>these bases look cool
>"no modding support"
And dropped.
What a shame.
Why don't you fags turn off the meme filters? fuck
I swear to god if this game doesn't have mod support when they eventually down tools and say "eh, good enouhg" I am going to burn down their studio/garage.
In Minecraft.
I never cared about minecraft so that fat dane isn't on my list
Where'd you get my picture from!?
then go fucking play modded skyrim user, it has all your sick fantasies and more
>muscle
>orc
>happy_trail
>modding means coomer shit
I just want more content. The only other survival building game I have ever played is Terraria, and that game has so many fucking mods.. I've gotten thousands of hours out of that game because of mods. Some mods add like hundreds of new enemies, weapons, biomes, fucking everything.
Now I realize Terraria is kinda easy to mod, but it doesn't excuse no mod support. Mod support in a game like this can keep it alive for years to come.
No mod support means the game is going to die after it's fully released.
>play
>skyrim
kek
The Skyrim Modding scene has gotten pretty good in the last year and with developments into modding tools, having more than 600+ Mods is insanely easy to do with little effort. If you know what you're doing.
It's a pretty fun game with mods. Though even then the core mechanics of the game really limit what you can do, which is why I always, always suggest magic. But even then the game is a solid 7/10 depending on what mods you have.
This game could be better with an active modding scene. It's just a shame they aren't going to support it. Game will be dead after it leaves early access if it isn't already going to lose all hype and traction in the next month or two.
>I just want more content.
and youll get it, just calm your damn tits and have some fucking patience
>No mod support means the game is going to die after it's fully released.
you dont play a lot of vidya do you user
>game isn't even finished
>here is your new content
>it's literally just a full game being told to retards it's DLC
Still seeing no reason to not add modding support.
My wishes for the future:
>remove the workbench requirement or greatly improve the radius
>add one more row of personal inventory or items that are equippable that add a few more slots at a time
>make terraforming tools a bit more reliable (or I just don't know wtf I'm doing). Like a translucent image of what the terrain will look like if you hoe the ground
>give me a way to weatherproof wood or a new type of wood that is weatherproof without need of a roof
>let me dive underwater so as to retrieve shit down there
>give me some magic spells via staves or wands
Other than that just more of the same content. More enemies, dungeons, biomes.
This game is fucken awesome. 60 hours in and I'm still thinking about it when I'm not playing it.
One boss left to beat. Finally found the merchant.
Nearing 70 hours now.
I'll get this boss beat, and then let the game simmer for a year or so before booting it up with mods and updates.
Well worth my 20 burgers
What is the best way to find the merchant? Just roam the forests?
Drop decrease a lot with bow skill. by lvl 20 it's already really good.
Apparently he should be near the central spawn, so unless you're using a seed from someone who has said "here be yon asshole" you'll have to explore outwards. If you're more than a 1/3 of the radius out I'd say don't go further just keep sweeping. He should appear on your map when he's in view so even if you didn't see him yourself on screeen he'll be marked.
I downloaded wemod and set my player speed to x18 and roamed hte forests until he popped up.
It's pretty bullshit how random it is. I don't need anything he's selling now at the point I am during the game.
Use the seed;
>42069lolxd
It has a merchant close to the spawn. A giant continent with all biomes easily accessible and all bosses close by.
yeh. When you get within a pretty large radius of him you get a map point for him.
>>remove the workbench requirement or greatly improve the radius
Leveling up the workbench should increase the radius
I don,t remember where but i read that Wards also stop monster spawns, like workbenches?
Is it true?
How does multiplayer work? I'm on the mood for some light surviving-crafting game, but I read solo play is almost impossible at mid game.
Can random people join my world to get down a boss? Or do I have to search for "friends" through discord shit?
Once you git gud with bow, you can snipe shit from a mile away
>my base has gotten large enough that when the ward is telling me my base is being attacked it takes a while to find the grey bitch that is doing it
I want to genocide these guys.
you read wrong, , solo is fine,
In any case, you can hop servers with a character, keeping your current inventory. Bosses are tied to the server, so if you go to another server and kill a boss, it won't count for your own server. Recipes you learn stay with your character
>heh it's only a greydwarf what damage can it really doe
> destroy my 150+ carrot farm.
Now i kill every greydwarf in sight, as a matter of principle.
Also apparently you can tame wolves, might jsut tame a bunch and let them roam the base to handle those faggots.
Anyone else prefer the Karve over the Longship because its easier to maneuver? Feels almost as fast too? It's got less inventory slots but four is quite a bit for hauling iron. Thats 120 ores.
But what's the point of joining a random player world then? If I need 10000 copper for my next crafting, do I get it faster if I play with someone? Do you get good loot by joining and helping other people with their bosses?
Depending on your RNG luck, your own world might be a barren hellhole filled with rivers and ocean, or one huge continent with everything and anything presented to you on a silver plate.
My friend had played the game for over 30 hours before I started, and he already had Bronze + rock crafting tools, and he literally came to my game to loot normal ROCKS.
A number of enemies huck rocks at you, but that's about it.
i swear, trolls aren't that big of an issue, but the moment those trolls and greydwarfs decide to fuck around with my main base, then is when i take it fucking personally. i had to restructurer my rooms and behive nest because of those fuckers
There is some exploitive unintended shit you can do with a 2nd server to speed up ore gathering tremendously, i'll let you find it.
But no, outside the benefit of numbers you don't get more ores. There's some efficiency advantages like sharing the upgrades for the forge and workbench, and easier hauling, but that,s about it.
i spent 5 days tying to make a decent house and always delete it. i have no creativity at all
Are you drunk or ESL?
start with something simple, and then expand from that. thats how i built my houses anyway. go with a simple idea and see how much you can add on to it to spice it up
frankly, i looked at other players base and tried to incorporate elements i liked
Here's how it looks presently. I've been focusing on iron so it's still pretty barren, but as soon as 3rd boss is gone i'm going on a decoration spree.
>he doesn't have an elevated home
>laughingeinherjarsluts.jpg
>get drunk
>fall off your house
>die
Dumb.
You don't need to be so melodramatic. Build simple houses and if it doesn't meet your needs, add onto it or leave and build a new one. There's no such thing as "too many houses" in this. It's beneficial having extra shelters, and the map is huge, so having homes away from home is only a boon.
Something about the structure integrity for stone seems fucked. I've got a stone wall and a stone door curved overhang that just kind of collapse sometimes for no reason. The overhang is orange while all the stone it is attached to it green, including the other adjacent overhang. Seems like a bug but I could be missing something. I've added core wood and its not improving stabilization.
>he can't handle his liquor as an immortal viking warrior
Do you even build, user?
any based Dab Forumsros wanna buy me this game so i can play with friends. i pirated it and it has been fun so far.
ask on of your friends to buy it for you
Seems like stairs and floors outside my house decay too. Don't get why that happens, but it's irritating having to fix up all my steps into my house.
The Archs? If so, they're kinda weird. You gotta make them more close to whatever else you build. In this picture, you can see I made them clip with eachother and forced them to support themselves through the columns.
They work pretty good for that.
Theyr'e also good for deer hide and raw meat if you let at least two loose into the great wilderness where they chase boar and deer down commiting ecological suicide while bolstering their population and you'll see wolves so far from the starting position
I might just do that. I got a few big mountains on my starter continent too, so they should be easy to get going.
I still want to build a few 2* piggy farms beforehand, before cullign their population. with wolves.
I am convinced some of the people building these massive things are using an inventory editor or they have been grinding since the game came out on the 2nd and are also unemployed. I have been doing 7 hours~ a day since Saturday and I have only built 3 small but decent looking buildings. The two people I'm playing with like to do more hunting and exploring than building and resource gathering but that still helps me out a bit because they bring back food, ore and scarce tems.
Thanks user. I'm stil don't know about buying it. Maybe I will, play until I'm tired of the grind, and return months later when devs have more content
I made a few pretty large structures since the game came out and I have a job, I also exercise and go out from time to time. But I just got annoyed at how shitty the inventory system is, especially in comparison to other games of it's kind. So I just used debugmode to create my dream house without adding anything to it I don't currently have myself.
I asked them and they gave me a lukewarm response. figured id try my luck but didn't expect much
Any wood not covered by a roof will decay to 50% due to weathering. It won't ever break though from that.
Kind of looks bad. I hope they put in some way to prevent that.
>start game
>literally just spent 20 mins punching shit for wood and stones
Holy fuck it's just minecraft, thank fuck I pirated this shit.
Join the pirated Dab Forums server user!
Maybe people prefer to you know, play the game instead of watching some video
>don't care for giant structures, just like comfy little cabins
>make a small cabin with a large shed nextdoor for crafting
>make a small cabin in each separate biome for bosses and materials
>only takes a few hours
>kill all bosses in the next couple days solo
>mfw completed the game in only 3 days
I'm really hoping this game will have modding when it's fully released. As it is now, it's too small, too simple and too limited.
Modding would fix a lot of the issues this game has even in it's current state.
So far I've downloaded the carry weight mod and the stacking mod to deal with the abysmal inventory system this game has. But I can't see myself getting more out of it without mods.
>He doesn't have a trenched fort
Bow is one of the best weapons in the game and required, throwing spears is also pretty based but that's costly if you dont recover the spears
Throwing spears are viable
Because it autoloots and is autoequipped
Love that feature
>join game, get lost at night, run towards home
>explode into giblets
Find out that the spiked 45degree forward palisades hurt like shit
Moats and spikes all the way.
Fuck i hope they put that in.
>youtube views a lot
>youtube views very less
hahaha holy shit, please tell me this is brilliant bait
third boss resists ranged attacks, otherwise ranged is literally easymode
I cannot imagine watching somebody just play this game. I have watched a few sped up build videos for building ideas but that's about it.
Yes, and?
He was right next to the Elder summon for me so I found him immediately
No idea where to go next after beating Elder though
God sometimes having new friends jump in your game can be really bad timing.
Two friends decided to impulse purchase it, but we were three bosses in and spent 2 hours processing iron and cooking food.
Like it's a survival game not an ARPG.
>survival game
>Doesnt have shitting mechanics
Hop to it Irongate
Oh and the sling is a great idea. Would work well with poop. Sling your turds at a trolls face to blind him.
Considering how many outhouses I've found in game, I'm surprised there's not a shitting mechanic.
>discord shit has literal shit fetish
>go to the swamp
>catch dysentry
Seriously, the swamp is already my least favorite zone. Fuck blobs.
I don't mind swamp too much, but it is definitely a spike in difficulty unless you bring the hoe with you to level out some of the terrain. A lot of my swamps were pretty small though.
I only ever found the one, but it was pretty big and surrounded by plains, i got murked a few times by deathsquitos.
Constant wet is also annoying.
I have been playing with one other friend all week and we are nearing the end of how much bronze level grinding we wanted to do before trying to go to the next boss. As I was out sailing around looking for said biomes and my friend was doing one last ore mule cart run through the forest we had another friend buy the game and start it up. He didn't message us so maybe he was waiting for an invite but I didn't because he would have needed to get up to speed while I was half a world away and buddy would have been at the base just smelting. Wouldn't have made for a great introduction to the game.
Why does the pavement road option on the hoe require a stonecutter range?
Fuck that's unlucky dude. My plains were pretty much all around moder, making it a deathrun to the mountain before getting blitzed by the bugs and the gremlins.
I guess one nice thing is that Ooze bombs melt shaman shields and are overall nice for that aoe damage, something I didn't know until that point.
>friends had been playing for some hours before i bought the game
>"yo come to our main base, its in some cool ruins in black forest
>turns out the base was literally built on the summoning altar of the elder
>75% of the base destroyed in the ensuing boss fight
Totally worth it though.
If you play on a server which is up 24/7. How does it handle when bosses are killed or ores mined? Can you respawn them? Do they affect all people?
I haven't played the game yet.
bosses can be spawned endlessly as long as you have the summoning mats
I dont understand what you mean by the ores mined part but if youre thinking something changes because of mining them then nothing does
Only the crude bow has horrible drop. The fine bow has very little. I assume the upgraded bows have even less but I am mostly melee.
>Only the crude bow has horrible drop.
oh thank odin. Course by teh time I get a better bow I'll be so used to aiming with so much elevation I'll have to learn to shoot again.
Ore is a finite resource. Eventually you would run out. Its theoretically possible but practically impossible because the map is so very fucking large.
Ranged combat is largely supplementary. You can run around kiting with a bow, but it does less damage than anything else and more importantly costs a fucking shitton of stamina.
>sail to another island
>finally find a swamp
>start exploring a bit more
>Plains
>get fucking one shotted by some spear goblin
>my fucking gravestone disappeared
I’m not even that mad because it was just bronze armor but those little fuckers hit hard
i dont think resources spawn outside of animals like deer and boars
Bow and blunt are the only two "mandatory" weapon types. On the one hand I like enemies being weaker vs certain weapons but having enemies effectively invincible vs all weapons that arent (x) is kinda sucky.
>t. hasn't crafted the chitin harpoon, one of the best weapons in the game
>I wanna know something before I get this game.
Ok
>How viable is ranged combat?
A group always needs at least 1 or more dedicated ranged, everybody will need a bow for hunting, but usually the best are reserved for your ranged fighters.
>Is it possible to go through the entire game by using ranged combat only?
Ranged only, I don't think so, especially not initially.
>Are there other forms of ranged weapons that arent bows?
Not at the moment. Enemies have ranged spells or throw rocks, but for now it's not player accessible. I have a feeling more is on the way, a lot of people bought this game and I would also like to see more ranged options. It's very viking ish, but a javelin, throwing knife/axe, and a slingshot would still be solid fits.
>Like crossbows/throwing axes/throwing javelins?
What did I just say?
>Pls respond
No
I did a total of 8 death runs in two swamps that touched plains without ever getting any iron. Started a new seed and it had 3 crypts in a swamp surrounded entirely by black forest. Easiest iron of my life.
Also plains is the last biome. Stay the fuck away.
Ranged is unironically the best way to kill bosses and trolls
no, building le epic castle you saw in a youtube video is peak npc. Making your own comfy little cottage and spending your playtime actually exploring is the exact opposite of npc
getting iron sucks, holy shit
bronze is easy street compared to this
store.steampowered.com
>Currently 7th most streamed game on twitch, surpassing CS:GO, Dota 2, Minecraft and Rust
>Over 20 million hours of gameplay already watched - now help us find a Viking reference for this one!
> gameplay already watched
It's streamerbait alright
>it takes 3 ores to make 1 bronze sheet.
>it takes 1 ore to make 1 iron sheet.
Are you retarded or?
Tin and copper is easy to find
>people want to watch a fun game
shocker.
Easier than glowing beacons in the darkest zone? Iron is literally marked with torches for you. I genuinely cant tell if you're trolling or if you dont know where to find iron.
retard
There are throwing spears.
yeah. way, way easier
poorfags are disgusting.
tin and copper is abundant, and every starting continent gonna have enough of it to completely gear you up.
Meanwhile, you often don't have a swamp on your main island, and you need a large one to provide enough iron to gear you up and forge upgrades.
Frankly, i'm fine with both, but bronze is really easy once you know where to find the ore, and know that the copper veins often continue on the side and below, it's not just the exposed part.
Game is in Unity, right? they have a decent mod manager and modding scene.
>never got the plains biome on the starting island
is this somehow hardcoded into world generation? caus I really want to have that biome on my starting island
So in swamp biomes there are crypts marked with green torches. Every single crypt will have 60 to 90 iron. You can more or less scope out where crypts are without ever entering the actual biome.
I imagine you're digging holes in the swamp looking for iron deposits lol.
It can happen, it's just not common.
bronze tools cost 8 bronze
iron tools cost 20 iron
iron takes way too fucking long to mine its actually ridiculous
I've got plenty of crypt with 20-30. i got saved by one havign aroudn 160, but without it i'd have to look for another swamp.
Bronze is REALLY easy because there are dark forest everywhere. I dunno what more there is to say
Swamps and plains are usually far away from your starting point
Bronze pickaxe takes 10 bronze.
10 bronze is 30 ores.
Iron pickaxe takes 20 iron.
20 iron is 20 ores. You're trolling.
The time to gather bronze is far greater than the time to gather any other metal. Metal gets easier and easier to mine with every tier. Silver literally gets marked on the map for you.
I'm not saying bronze is "hard" but at the time you mine it it takes 3 to 5 times the effort and time of every other metal.
middle mouse button lets knives and swords deal piercing damage, also spears, but yes being ranged is very convenient at times
If it takes you time to mine bronze, you aren't doing it well. Unless you got a massive swamp with good crypts everywher,e but then its you getting blessed by the seed.
you can play with friends with a pirated copy
