We have a similar sort of system in my city and its wildly successful. If there's a homeless person screaming on the street or running around having a mental breakdown there is a specific mental health unit specifically trained in de-escalation who transport the individual to the hospital. Less people get shot, more people with mental health issues get treated at hospitals instead of jamming up local jails and the mental health unit responds to almost 30% of all police calls so it frees up the cops to respond to actual public safety situations. It has also resulted in a massive decrease in police response time. As it turns out, the less time cops spend trying to talk down schizophrenic street people the more time they have to rush over to your house when its being robbed. Its really a no brainer. On top of that, these people are braver than cops. Cops will shoot someone's fucking poodle if it looks at him sideways while this mental health unit hits the street everyday completely unarmed to do the job that cops should be doing - putting their safety on the line for the purpose of protecting the public. Honestly, if cops are too pussy to deal with mentally ill people without gunning all of them down the second they flinch then whats the harm in giving the job to people that actually want to do it, are cheaper to hire and CAN do it successfully without murdering or beating every person they're called to help?

I live in an Oregon city of almost 200,000 people. We've had a standalone mental health response unit in my cirty for about 10 years. They take only a few million out of the police budget but, as I said, respond to almost 30% of all police calls. You can contact them directly through the non-emergency police line.

Because those require specific budgets to manage, and most states (even so-called left-wing states like Oregon) try to avoid establishing such a budget.

It has its issues and, sure, vagrants and street people are a consistent problem up here but I can tell you from experience working downtown that it would be much, much worse if the police were expected to respond to every mental health call that went through. Not only would they never leave the downtown area but far more people would get injured just on the basis of weapons being involved. Our mental health response unit doesn't carry weapons and having called them many, many, many, many times, I can say that 90% of the time the homeless/mentally ill person either gets in their van willingly for transport to a hospital or they refuse help and leave the area.

I was attached to a drug task force as military support (I could drive any vehicle they had) and found a guy who seemed smarter than the rest and we investigated a suspect and discovered a whole new level of dealing that everybody else had overlooked. I was psyched and hot to get onto the force (this was 20 years ago). I'm not MENSA material but most cops usually don't look beyond the obvious.
The test was embarrassingly easy (the ASVAB was much harder-and I scored a 92 on that-not being MENSA as I mentioned). I didn't want to move from Oregon (DMA in Virginia was interested as I was a cartography major), but I just took a job with the BLM... making maps (kind of boring really).

Recent data shows that despite only representing 1 in 50 U.S. adults individuals with untreated severe mental illness are involved in at least 1 in 4 and as many as half of all fatal police shooting.

I always find it instructive to include the percentage per total population when discussing any of these statistics (violent crimes, gun deaths, suicides, etc.) the "total number" loses meaning when there is a vast difference in the populations of a region.

So, I did a quick search and pulled government supplied population estimates for 2020. When there was conflicting info, I chose the slightly lower number and rounded slightly down, so there could be minor variations in percentages. Texas, for example, also had an estimate of 29.8 million population, which would have shifted the percentage to 0.08674%.

For further research, total tax income by the state, total Federal money given to the state, compared to total spent on law enforcement and on mental health services would be instructive. Also, significant differences exist between state law enforcement and city and county and other jurisdictions, as well as available mental health services in those jurisdictions, which should be taken into account. But, that would take time and effort so I'm skipping out on it and leaving it as an exercise for the readers.
