The entirety of Australia apparently doesn't jive with the political climate of american facebook.
How about that.

Great, they should bring that policy over to America.

Not a terrible idea, so long as you ban it all. Some people will just start rephrasing articles in their posts, but at least it'll take more work. As it is, it's like leaving someone suicidal alone in a room with a gun. Better it at least downgrade it to a saw.

Mate, just go behind 7 proxies or tinyurl.

Aussies can't share news. More at whogivesafuck.

>getting your news from facebook
Do Australians really?

Good. Now if they role this out to the rest of the world as well, as well as blocking all those fucking annoying adverts that keep jamming it up, Facebook might become usable again.

No, that’s the problem. Our traditional media giants are just being choked out because they suck and are being replaced, and now they want free internet money and are trying to ruin the internet for everyone else until they get it. It’s literally the South Park episode covering the writers guild strike.

There is nothing stopping you from changing the channels, and unlike say, 80's TV, there are billions of them. Size also isn't much of a factor on the Internet, when it comes to picking an news source. (Hell, half the people on this board get ALL their news from individual bloggers - doubt how many of them found them on Facebook or even Google.)

Word of mouth is a factor, I'll give you that, but Facebook and Google services blocking isn't really going to put a dent in that.

Yes, some big news agencies may feel more secure, and may even benefit, slightly - but not everything that benefits the rich is necessarily bad. Indeed, a great deal of it is good, which is a large part of why the middle class joins supposedly fiscally conservative parties that defend them, and why the poor don't eat them.

Balance, don't hate everything that benefits the system, as this nation, along side all its allies and the entire western world, depends on it. Without it, we would all be dominated by another. Improve the nation, yes, by all means, call out injustice wherever you see it, that is your damned duty as a citizen in the "free world" - but don't sink it in your narrow vision of hatred, no matter how justified it becomes.

Zuckerberg shows who has the power.(Just kidding, never let an autie make executive level decisions).
>half the people on this board get ALL their news from individual bloggers

MSM is trying to adapt, but half the people leaving them don't go to individual bloggers with no agenda , but go to the crackpots on Facebook.

I have a relative who spams my email with BILL GATES nanobots vaccine Facebook level shit routinely.
I can't block her because family and i won't get to visit my nephews in her house anymore.

Holy Based! Lefties make a rule that fucks lefties means of brainwashing people. Based. Based. Based.

No more fact checking niggas running round spreading propaganda. Australia will be right-wing soon.

Australia has a conservative government, smoothbrain

>I have a relative who spams my email with BILL GATES nanobots vaccine Facebook level shit routinely.
Exactly, but if that's what they really wanted, they didn't need Facebook to get it. Some people are just really vulnerable to the rabbit hole effect, and will seek it out, as people's inner minds are more dazzling and exciting than any story or news, and all these stories do is make their minds run in circles, seeing its song in everything, digging ever-deeper holes. That is, indeed, what they are designed to do. It's a very, very old, writer's trick - the mind, has a pattern it cannot resist: the birth of a universe.

If yer a young one, I cannot describe to you how many people who saw the X-Files in the 90's, and thought it was real. They thought Chris was revealing the "truth"... And in a sense, he was, not on a factual level, but on an emotional one. He was describing what living in his nation was like to him. He was just in a bad place at the time, and people took advantage of it for money - the same process that makes people feel as he did.

Horror fiction being marked as horror fiction, doesn't always cut it. If the story is dark and exciting and has no exit to the surface of reality within its scope, people will trap themselves in it.

At the same time, a story like the X-Files, really can help some people open their eyes, and help make the world a better place, in the right state of heart and mind - for someone in a bad place, it's poison.

One less source of undirected psychedelics in the biggest wells, however, is a good idea in my book. Next trick, is to get people to realize the stories that they choose to accept as reality, are responsible for the state of their world, as we each live in our own universe, and only get occasional glimpses of our shared reality - of which no one of us see all, only imagine.

>of which no one of us sees all, only imagines.
That's a lot of blank space we all constantly write on, in our heads, to the tune of the songs we surround ourselves with. If the song of your life is fucked and all the songs you listen to are those discordant songs of cancellation, you will cancel yourself, for that evil you see, is your mirror from another position. There is no limit to the good or evil any man can do, from the right or wrong position, and position is something we oft get little say in.

...and everyone in this nation, and most nations, was raised on those broken songs of good vs. evil, that rarely, if ever, sing the lyric that heroes are made by villains. Old heroes often become villains, and villains, are often young heroes... We all love our family for everything we hate them for.

Choose your music carefully, sample widely, and never swim so deep into the darkness, that you can no longer see your past's reflection, dancing on the waters above. Only then can you be prepared to deal with those near misses with allegiances of reality, and see them for what they truly are: the collective pattern of all our minds combined, constantly struggling with itself, to sort itself out, as it has been since we came down from the trees or ate that apple.

Choose you role in that mind, thoughtfully. Heaven and hell are both places on earth.

nobody remembers the xfiles outside of that silly theme song

He's a troll
He is lefty and blames righty instead of porky and is being sarcastic
Don't feed him

I feel like if all social media were banned it would be the equivalent of landing a man on the moon in terms of accomplishing something good for all mankind

Mate, idgaf, this is just Godzilla vs Mothra, who the fuck pays attention to the “”””news””””? Whether it’s MSM or crack pop bloggers, it’s all a bunch of garbage.

I think social media is more like nuclear fission.

It's something mankind was not ready for when he invented it, but it is so powerful, it has the potential to take him to the stars, cementing his immortality, and bring peace on Earth... Or to end all mankind.

All via a simple principle of chain reaction.

What we've been witnessing, these past four years, are the consequences of mankind playing with global emotional management nukes.

Though the needle always settles somewhere in-between the two extremes, so don't panic when the anti-proliferation treaties start flying sloppily about, and applaud those that don't imprison you for your own protection.

And remember, especially on the Internet, we all wear reflective masks of our own design.

You'd like it in North Korea.

Good.

Don't have to have seen it to know what I'm talking about though. Why? Because we have

Seriously, go over there, browse some threads, so long as you can laugh at the all too familiar pattern. Hear the song underneath it. Many, have minds that fall silent in wonder and sing along like blind angels of things they do not know, yet everyone knows, all because they are all trapped in their own prayers for a world that is more just for them, on their containment boards, and no longer care about their futures, or those of their children.

...Sadly, at this rate, the X-files are going to be with us for long after the real Gillian Anderson and Johnette Napolitano have rotted away.

>Life never existed before twitter

A direct result of the Liberal and Labor Governments Sucking Rupert Murdoch's Dick for too long, Just because he's losing money in his fake news empire doesn't mean we should suck harder by trying to blame his targets!!

I hope this results in a fall of the political parties currently in power after all they passed this stupid bill, not Mark Zuck. it's just Greed on a whole new level!!!

Yep, lets uphend the entire country because they told an American billionaire to pay for something.

This is a slapfight between the wealthy, but one just pulled a fucking CCP-tier censorship and you say he's the good guy.

>If yer a young one, I cannot describe to you how many people who saw the X-Files in the 90's, and thought it was real.

The fuck? It's a TV show, how on earth did you conflate that with "reality"? Even as a six or seven year old it was obvious that it was just a sci-fi TV show. People are so goddamn dim it's just outright painful sometimes.

What needs to be done is a crack down on misinformation given that's what can do a lot of damage.
Hell, look at how the spread of lies in the US dropped like a fucking bolder when Trump got banned.

quick rundown for foreigners and ppl out of the loop
>pic related controls 99.97% of all news, media, magazines etc in Australia
>convinces the govt he controls to change laws
>laws would force Facebook, Google etc to pay Murdoch for the privilege of posting links to his content
>FB and Google tell him to go and get fucked
>now all of Murdoch and the Liberal Party's media and news outlets are banned from facebook
>their news doesnt even show up on Google until at least page 5
>butthurt billionaires and corrupt politicians chimp out that they cant rig elections anymore

nah Murdoch and the Libs have been in bed ever since Howard removed Media Bias/Monopoly laws in the mid 00's.
Murdoch got too greedy and now he's paying the price for it.

The news media isn't. The Conservatives did a 4d chess move on them.

I say all news should be purged from social media.

>Next trick, is to get people to realize the stories that they choose to accept as reality, are responsible for the state of their world, as we each live in our own universe, and only get occasional glimpses of our shared reality - of which no one of us see all, only imagine.

Joseph Campbell thought that the mandala in the Tibetian Buddhist tradition was the highest form of idol worship.

One could create their own mandala and pray to it, the manadal simply being a focus for anything that the person praying wanted it to be.
Jesus, yin/yang, the one mirror reflects it self/sees it self, etc.

Its even more complicated than that. Facebook essentially kills news competitors by not advertising itself as a news platform, but sucking up all the news and redistributing it on their site anyway.
Google does the same thing.

These are essentially tech monopolies running news competition out of business when they are objectively not news services. They are sponges. But duplicitous snakes like
Will try to say "YoU Can JuSt ChaNge ThE ChanNeL" which doesn't count if Google, Facebook, Instagram, etc own the cable service and simply steal content from these channels and rebroadcast them to you with their ads inserted instead of theirs. That essentially murders these companies.

Only if Social Media itself is purged and then tightly regulated.
It's just as important while being just as misleading as regular news. Only regular news has regulation requiring it to be somewhat non-partisan. Social Media can literally just manipulate the public information climate and get zero repercussions.

The irony is that you could say the same thing about Google, Facebook, twitter, etc. They were trying to rig the elections by simply choosing which news they did or did not distribute. You're acting as if this is a good thing. Like somehow having less information is good for voters simply because you don't like who is giving it.

Not him but you underestimate how many people pay attention to the """"news"""", that's why things are going to shit so quickly with so many uninformed/misinformed people who get all of their information from garbage like NYT and Twitter.

I don't agree with this take on it being equivalent to Nuclear Fission. It's much more like the US Railroads in the late 19th century.
A lot of people forget but the US almost entirely funded the railway system publicly. There was no 'private' initiative in it other than the contractors they hired to build and maintain it. It was objectively public infrastructure.

So what did the railway companies do? They used different sized rails and different thickness ties to make it unsafe for their competitors trains to travel. Basically any competitor that wanted to take something from point A to point C through point B had to take their train to point B, unload literally everything on the train, get a different set of cars licensed or rented from a different transport company, load the train, and then go to point C

Because after all, "free company can do what they want", or so they thought.

The government, back when it had teeth and a brain, said "No" to this practice, and harshly regulated the railway companies so they couldn't do that, requiring them to standardize their industry and not lock competitors out of the infrastructure and transport even if it required them having to service their own competitors. Why? Because these company could only exist with public infrastructure. They didn't go pay for the railways to be built, the government did. And they had to serve the American public first and foremost with the public infrastructure before themselves.

The social media giants are just the railway and the telcom trusts yet again. A giant, cancerous tumor that has absorbed most of a public infrastructure who couldn't exist without it locking parts of it down to kick competitors off of it. Just like the railway trusts, they will be regulated in the future as well. Hopefully before they do too much damage to our society. Because it's for the public good, who will ultimate win out over the neoliberal permavirgins, shills, and corporate money.

Ooh, poor smoothbrain. So close, yet so far.
literally every liberal democracy on Earth now has written regulations for social media companies and their tech monopolies EXCEPT America. Yet we're always told it would be fascist to regulate the poor witty bitty Facebook and Twitter for trying to manipulate our news channels and our access to basic communications by shoving out competitors. ACTUAL liberal countries caught onto their game years ago, and required them to recognize and not interfere by passing anti-tracking and fairness laws like the GDPR, as well as suing them into the dirt when they cross common legal boundaries (Like the UK suing twitter because its policies objectively protect CP on its platform)

It's ONLY America that hasn't caught up, and twits continue to scream 'FASCISM!' when regulation or breakups are brought up.

Listen, Ted Lieu, actual fascist governments attacking social media doesn't look like banning social media for its scummy practices. It looks like China literally disappearing their version of Jack Dorsey because he was doing 1/4th of what Jack was doing to China's citizens. Jack, Zuck, all of the clowns of big tech can only exist in a cucked country like the USA because they would be in chains in any other country for what they do as a business model. Stop sucking the dick of the richest companies on Earth and wake up to the fact that our protection of them just hurts ourselves.

Thats not what The Facts™ as told to me by The Left©©℗ say.
nice try tRumper. thats a debunked conspiracy theory.

Everyone on facecuck does that. Any blogpost on facepage is considered credible, journalistic "news" by facecucks. It's not an Australian problem so much as a problem with the segment of humanity in any society that behaves like that.

So, why is Australia only charging Facebook for links posted on facepages? Why aren't they charging every single webpage in the universe for any link on it to an Australian website? Isn't everyone equal under the law in Australia?

>garbage like NYT
> somehow equivalent to Twitter
OK, Qaren. 'Bye, Qaren.

Not myself, but I treated and dealt with a lot of people who did, and a lot of people still do, they just don't realize it. Half the news is X-Files v20.21.

Issue being: Who tells lies from truth? "Official" truth is as apt to be untrue as "Unofficial" truth.

In the end, each individual must determine their own truth, regardless of the models of law, and most, it seems, choose to follow the truth of a narrative, rather than the truth of events.

Which, might not be a problem, if people were more apt to choose positive truths when in negative situations, and if every narrative's mission wasn't to cancel another's out, but alas, it is all quite the other way around.

Problem being, unlike railroads, any shitbird who breaths can build a website with an allegiance to a false narrative, and any official truth, will be considered lies by those that distrust officials, even when what they say is true, even when the officials are sponsoring the unofficial sources, and telling opposing tales.

People trust hearts, more than they trust truths, and the former is much simpler illusion to grasp, than the latter.
