>have a manga I want to translate
>it's been translated months ago into some other language so the manga page already exists
Do people care about the stuff in 'New Titles' or am I destined to mediocrity because now my Ch.1 won't be featured down there

Too slow, Nothin personnel kid

If there is a manga I want translated can I hire someone to translate it? I see the raw volumes on eBay for pretty cheap. I can't read Jap at all. How do I get someone to translate it?

If you don't mind ESLMTL I'll do it for 5 dollars :DDD

Yeah but be prepared to shill out. You're asking for a lot, expect to pay as much.

Like user said, anything can be done with enough cash but getting things done well isn't cheap. If you look at how much translators tend to charge for often shitty work on hentai oneshots, you can see how much a full series would cost.

The difficulty is that, speaking for myself, as soon as somebody starts asking me for a quote I'm going to expect them to pay a reasonable market rate for my services. It's not in the same realm as free scanlation. You're better off trying to find a group interested in the series and seeing if you can join them and help.

Post the series, maybe somebody here will be inspired.

Please survive for 10 more hours

How much are we talking?

Just for a super general ballpark figure, here's the rates chart of a hentai translator I've worked with before who does a decent job. Keep in mind that for that amount you're getting basic text editing in bubbles by the same person who does the TL. If the manga has any more complex redraws (e.g. lots of text outside of bubbles like some shojo manga) then you'll need to pay a redrawer separately.

Also of note is that you'll have to pay for the raw files if they're not publicly available, or otherwise get your hands on them. With hentai this often isn't an issue since so much scanned stuff has already been uploaded to ex, but this is less true of manga. Public raws are often nonexistent or of a low quality, so you may need to buy the digital volumes for the series you want worked on (if you're really rich then buy the books and pay somebody to scan them).

For a real example of a non-H manga getting this sort of treatment you can take a look at the crowdfund for Kaze to Ki no Uta - dokidokimaster.tumblr.com/post/624223386706608128/kaze-to-ki-no-uta-vol-10-translation-crowdfunding. The issues I described (shit quality raws, little to no redrawing) are very evident. You get what you pay for.

Post the series so I can actually appraise it.

Attached: comische.png (625x537, 70.2K)

Literally, who cares? Just translate it if you feel like it.

From me? $15 a chapter.

I just want to be able to read it. As long as the text in bubbles gets translated and I can understand the story that's all I need. I would just buy the physical volumes off of eBay or whatever if I couldn't find scanned raws. Raw Manga from Japan goes for cheap on eBay

You can probably find somebody to do it for the rate in that screenshot I gave or something like it, provided that it's normal text-in-bubbles stuff without a bunch of text over page art.

Keep in mind that if the series is long it will take time to do all the volumes as well, and some people won't want to take on a long project.

You can't rush art and expect good results.

Sadly, I can't speed up my workflow any faster without sacrificing quality, so I'm sad to say I don't have anything to share.

Pay someoneb on fiverr if you are desperate

I have a handful of methods for speeding up workflow, like how to auto straighten pages, auto crop pages, auto clean bubbles, and auto center text. But I'm too lazy to explain the processes or go get the citation for where the original scripts/programs were made.

Oh well.

>Ps+Ai
That makes me wonder, has anyone ever tried to typeset using CorelDRAW?

I forget exactly what I was doing here.
Think it was showing how to get perfect black scaling levels.

Attached: 2019-04-07_12-23-35.webm (1920x1078, 1.56M)

I was playing with this tool recently after I began working on some physical scans, it works fine but it comes with the issue that the page boundaries may not line up with the panel boundaries (in my experience testing a number of raw pages, there was a disconnect with most pages, so if you only straighten raw pages based off the physical paper edge then all the panels will look slightly off).

I put together this guide which somebody might get some use out of. docs.google.com/document/d/1L01zFiT8tYT7JtFL-A_SdK2ImSEsMNiWO2xYNRO8ow0/edit

I mean, that program can straighten of the lines on the page as well, not just the physical edge of the page.

But I've always been of the mentality that preserving as much of the drawn artwork as possible is more important than straight boarder lines.

In the vast majority of cases it should be possible to do both, especially when there's already a margin on the page (like most manga pages).

Not really.
Almost never do mage pages have margins on 3 sides, or 4 sides.
Not sure what you're working with, but isn't the "vast majority".

I don't quite understand what the top copied layer was for.
Care to explain?

Fair, I guess I'm just speaking out of experience with regards to what I'm working with. It does depend on the artist and genre. Of course a priority is to preserve art if that's the case.

It's a second leveling layer. And you set it to a 5:1:7 ratio because that's the point where the human eye can't distinguish between "dark gray" and black.
After you make the 5:1:7 layer you go to your normal leveling layer and turn the black leveling up until the black sections of the page are mostly solid.

This is to prevent over leveling the page and losing art detail.
It's fine if there are couple stand out white specs when you do this. Those are likely specs of dust that were on the scanner, and you just manually touch up those places.

I just tried this, and it looks pretty good!
Many thanks for the tip, user!

What is the oldest manga that has been scanlated that I can read ? Some Tezuka shit ?

It's tips like this that make me glad I regularly go to these threads.
Thanks, user.

Yeah, if you're working on a 4 koma, or comic strips then yes, it's very easy to preserve art and make the boarder lines straight.

But if you work with thinks like this with artwork around 3 of the edges I think it's more important to preserve art than get straight boarder lines.

Attached: 0027.png (2550x3509, 3.46M)

I dunno, that looks pretty straight to me.
Unless you're talking about the yuri stuff.

>5-6 per minute
What the fuck. So like ~100-150 USD for a typical episode of anime? That's pretty nuts.

I assume they only mean a minute's worth of TL, since some scenes could have no lines.
But either way, that *is* still pretty nuts.

So... Any drama?

dont worry I'm doing my job reporting and doxing loli doujin scanners

What about yuri loli doujin scanners?

These webms make me want to learn shit. I know free software like GIMP and PDnet aren't going to cut it though. $21/mo for PS for a hobby I imagine I'll end up dropping is a little too much. I haven't looked at "borrowing" PS for more than a decade before they went service based. If I want features like content aware fill am I going to have to pay?

Attached: x16.jpg (1417x2000, 544.26K)

If you want safe cracks for photoshop you're going to have to look on private trackers.

I personally am on a few different private trackers and I got my copy of photoshop off redacted.

“Borrowing” PS hasn’t changed much. Go get CC2020 from RuTracker. As somebody who self-taught a while back, watching YouTube videos is a great way to learn.

Nice, that's the only other borrowing site besides nyaa I visit nowadays. I'll check out what they've got, thanks.
I might just cave and pay anyways though since I'm a huge pussy now and don't have the wherewithal to seed for private clubs.

Bubbles is likely something along the lines of an action consisting of:
- increase selection size by X pixels (number large enough to select the text.)
- decrease selection by X+a few pixels (to not select the border of the bubble)
- new layer
- fill selection with white.

Making actions is easy, but clicking through this manually also only takes a few seconds.

Can you afford 5$ a month? Rent a seed box and use it seed what you download off private trackers.

Then use a FTP server to download things off your seed box.
It actually serves as an extra layer of protection as well, because your IP never gets direct exposed to any torrent sites this way.

Seems kinda cumbersome way to use levels.
The histogram shows you where to put the sliders once you get used to it ... highest areas at the edges are what white and black are likely supposed to be.
Just move the triangles to this position.
If you feel really lazy use the pipette-symbols next to the histogram, one is for clicking on what is supposed to be black, one for white and one for neutral gray. Selecting the grayest white and black should give you a fairly clean image with two clicks.

Yeah, that defeats the purpose of accurate leveling. Which is to preserve page detail.

I just can't get a job no matter what. It turns out """entry-level jobs"""" nowadays require massive amount of organizational and non-academic experience. I have a "good" degree from a prestigious univ, but I have nothing else. It's really sad.
Should I just become a freelance translator/scanlator? even $1 / page would be great, assuming I get a commission everyday.(unlikely).

To check details I'd just add 2nd layers of levels on top one set to check the whites and one for the blacks. (sliders far to the sides) This way you can adjust the layer below to only remove the minimal amount of gray necessary.

Yeah, that's about the same amount of effort as just using two leveling layers.
I'd actually say even more. Because you are checking the levels and doing them at the same time with the method showed before.

well you're not doing it based on work-load, as much as availability of work and your requirements. most people doing realize employees can cost 2-3x their salary so if you're freelance you need to charge more to cover your shit

Get PS6, it's more than enough for scanlating and the cracked version is easy to get. Ask on that's where I got mine.

>as much as availability of work and your requirements
If I'm reading this right, this translates to "they charge extra so they can make a living while working a minimal amount of time."

Remind me again, if we're all little girls here, why isn't anyone stopping us from scanlating lewd doujins?

Attached: kanna rice.jpg (1280x720, 91.84K)

networking is a meme when you have to go through a formal administration process to get hired anyway.

>GIMP and PDnet aren't going to cut it though.
Just automate stuff:
de.catbox.moe/2i7n0c.mp4
files.catbox.moe/rlo049.mp4
de.catbox.moe/av4uss.mp4

user is talking out of his ass. You don't need to be on private trackers to get Photoshop and you never have (and I say this as somebody who is). There are a shitload of scanlators and they sure as hell aren't all on private trackers. RuTracker is safe and up to date.

You can check levels with a single layer by holding alt/option when dragging the slider to show which pixels become pure white/black by that operation.

You can make script in photoshop directly on the program just by pressing a key you wil lhave photoshop to a series of action that you programmed, look it up online

Here it is, thanks to QSS for linking and to whoever the original author is. mega.nz/file/rPhWWSSJ#APdxJCO5TciKUKMEOGfZISRQx9-dEDdM6-hjTH7XIs4

Thanks for this, user.
Now we don't seem to need the 5:1:7 adjustment layer anymore.

I get it now. I used to think some cleans are an inconsistent mess because the cleaners are fucking blind, but actually they're just lazy and do this

This is the reason I never automate anything.
Scripts and such are useful, but in stuff like this they can cause some messed up problems that would either take too long to hunt for and correct or would slip through QC, either of which just ruins the release.
Just do this stuff manually so you have complete control over what happens.

As somebody who automates a lot of things, you're not meant to *only* automate stuff. The whole idea is to manually check it afterwards and to only automate things where you know issues won't end up slipping through. The bubble action often leaves a few kanji still in bubbles but it's still faster to manually scrub a few then to not use the action at all.

That's not going to give accurate levels, though.
That's just checking it against black and white contrast levels.

Do a test for yourself. Try your method and try the other way. You will get different results.

I wasn't saying the result was identical, just that it's a method which can be used to check levels. I would use that in comparison with toggling the layer to view changes in the original until I'm happy.

I feel like you're putting to much effort into trying to reinvest the wheel.

That other method takes what? 30 seconds? Then you know the levels you need for each page and you're done. Make a batch action to set the levels for each new page.

And it's almost impossible to not get dead accurate results with it.

This script to speed up redraws

Ask groups that you think might be interested. If you provide free raws...

Don't get me wrong, I do think it's a good method and a novel trick that I hadn't seen before. It's exactly the sort of thing I hoped to see with this kind of OP. I was just pointing out another neat trick in the same spirit.

I think that both methods are pretty similar in the end. Because once you have your levels, via either method, you stick it in your action and that's that.

>Someone starts re-editing a series you did years ago (oddly one that no one really read anyway), with your script and new tank scans
Neat I gue-
>They localise and rewrite bits that were translated literally with TL notes (due to the story being dependent on the MC saying a certain set of magic mora accidentally as part of other words)
>tfw

But basically no one is reading their one either so どうでもいい in the end I guess.

Just message them about it and criticise their choice. They probably forgot it or something.

They had to do your job since you half assed it in the name of weeb autismo.

Nah, it's a 1:1 script copypaste for the most part, but they just completely rewrote the relevant parts where the MC says 'ban'/bang to activate the magic. Rewrote it to random shit containing the same syllables in English to make it 'work'. Shame because their editing is quite nice besides the script rape.

Funi devs pls.

Attached: no.jpg (1510x1079, 531.42K)

both are trash wtf are you thinking

The story is pretty trash, but one of those pages is a translation, one is a rewrite. Unless there's a synonym for Koban in English that contains the letters 'ban' not sure how else you'd expect it to be actually translated, fampai.

Attached: 話にならない.jpg (400x300, 24.17K)

They are probably rewriting it to avoid getting nuked by this Dex rule.

>2.3.2 Using the translated script of a release by another scanlation group is generally allowed as long as there is a significant difference from the source release, such as being translated to another language, or having significantly improved typesetting or higher quality raws.

>significantly improved typesetting or higher quality raws

They meet that anyway, so doubt it. They dropped all the honorifics too, so probably just aspiring future funi dub script writers.

The real mystery is why they even bother with it, no one read it way back when either, and it got axed after 25 chapters with a pretty rushed end and shitty middle too.

What's 'New Titles'?

Why would anyone scroll to the bottom of the front page

Wild words makes my eyes bleed

Anyone TLing or lettering for licensed stuffs? How do you build up a (legal) portfolio? Animaru?

It's all BL though

Amimaru sucks since they don't actually credit you and there are some NDAs. Better to look into other agencies.

Wondering the same thing. I was also considering that, or maybe some manhua publisher with low standards.

Have you anons already decided what you'll do for April 1st this year?

Nothing. I can't even get my regular releases out on time

Thinking of doing the proper chapter except with all the locales edited into disneyland, and random appearances from disney characters.
Feel free to steal the idea.

I normally translate yuri.
So I'll translate something yaoi instead.

Just change all the pronouns to male.

Translate something good instead, that'll get 'em.

I personally do the trick on a per-page basis since not all pages need the same leveling.
But there is a certain charm to using the same leveling for batches too I guess.

Dumb weaboo retard. Just say police station you fucking bakayaro.

*bakayaro is exactly what you are you dick sucking faggot

For me, it's astro city.

Aren't Astro City and Samaritan pretty much the same? Thought Samaritan was just a refined and updated Astro City.

Your work sucked anyways. Glad they're fixing it up.

>the story being dependent on the MC saying a certain set of magic mora (ban/bang) accidentally as part of other words
>just say police station

Bakayaro.

Yeah their editing is obviously better it was a long time ago no bully, but still, if they end up finishing it there'll be a few more things they need to rewrite, just a bad path to go down (and still not really translation).

depends. some major corps are really strict about procedures, others a recommendation is a golden ticket. you almost always have to interview still, but if you're not getting interviews you're in the "fucked" class.

i don't get the point of re-writing anyways. if someone dropped a series at a point, wouldn't you just continue from where they left off? if someone else translated the whole thing, why not work on something no one has touched?

Please read:
Saltiness & Agnes Kamen
What other manga translated by Dab Forumsnons do you recommend? I recommended this one because they can’t break over 500 views and they are really good

Sometimes trannies like to delete their chapters from MD

Do you actually have somebody check your translation or do you hope ever finds out when you make a mistake?

i'd say police box. those things aren't stations

Saltiness is pretty great. Try giving a read to Ore no Sora by Motomiya Hiroshi

So I tried to convert some manga pages using save-for-web on PS since that manga's single page of 1260x1800 is 4MB big. Both the JPG and PNG8 showed a 800KB on the preview, but the final result turned out to be around 4MB like before. What kind of bloat magic is this?
Here's the manga in question btw:

>Sometimes trannies like to delete their chapters from MD
Why would they do that?

Can someone please ban SquigglesJP from "translating" already?

I do, since we both have a pretty good grasp of both JP and the context of our series.
But in all honesty, no one will ever find out any TL mistake unless someone takes the time to compare the raws with the released chapter, which only happens in niche threads like this.

From the looks of their latest chapter, they're either MTLing with poor EN skills or are JP speakers with poor EN skills.
Either way, it feels very stiff to read.

What’s up with them?

I once sniped a doujin they translated and they leave out a lot of information and have incredibly dumbed down English so that wouldn't surprise me.

That is actually pretty good recommendation thanks

Let's not forget the shitty memes they keep adding to pages.

Just piratebay that shit.

both the group doing the manga and you are just utterly retarded it seems

Attached: 9.png (1260x1800, 1.06M)

It works better like this, in this particular instance. You don't want to ruin the impact of the most important line of dialogue with a fucking TN, you double retard.

Don't use save for web, it's deprecated
You can choose all that shit in the normal save dialog.

You don't want to ruin the impact of the most important line of dialogue with a fucking untranslated Japanese word, you triple retard.

Japanese words add tons of impact, every weeaboo knows this.

How do you anons reduce your file sizes without affecting quality?
I just use Riot to compress PNGs to JPG.
The file size differences are substantial and I don't notice any quality drops with the default manual mode.

Maybe try converting to PNGs through imagemagick?
>1.02MB
imagemagick.org/script/download.php

Attached: 9.png (1260x1800, 1.02M)

Don't even mention jpeg in this thread. Make your pages indexed pngs, it does wonders even if your palette is just grayscale, and if you need more, you can decrease the number of colors to like 32 without a noticable decrease in quality. Watch out for smooth gradients, though, because this method will fuck them hard.

If anyone's interested in helping TL the latest Mitsudomoe chapter, please join us!

Raw dump is on the bottom:

MTL haters are cringe
Mangadex and their mods love MTL and despise localization.

If your grayscale PNGs are too big, you're doing something wrong.

New replacement site when?

Attached: shit.jpg (1024x741, 56.52K)

I just save them with PS's default Save As PNG.
Someone here said Save for Web is now deprecated, so how do you anons save your png files from PS?

Export.

When this one inevitably falls off the bike.

I'm using PS CS6 and all Export gives me is:
Data Sets as Files (disabled)
Paths to Illustrator
Render Video
Zoomify (disabled)

Is the Export you're talking about from a newer version of PS or something?

I pray everyday for that to happen. They're getting too full of themselves with all the centralization of scanlation and godawful staff in general.
Manga uploading sites should be like nyaa.

By the way, our grayscale pngs aren't exactly "too big."
They're around 1 MB, give or take a few hundred KBs, but compared to jpgs that are about 300+ KB and look pretty identical to our naked eyes, the smaller file size does look pretty appealing.

Storage is cheap.
Bandwidth is cheap.
In what way is the smaller file size "appealing"?

>cheap
yeah but free is better.

Just that since we save up on a lot of space and bandwidth in the long run, and the jpgs look pretty identical to pngs with the naked eye, we don't see any point in sticking to pngs.

We're not trying to start a file formatting war though.
If anyone can suggest a way to have PS or some other tool generate pngs with smaller file sizes, please do.

When releasing a chapter, I have a script that saves all PSDs in a folder as png or jpeg into another folder based on whether they're grayscale or not. For png it uses the Save For Web function and for jpeg a simple Save As. I think the reason for this was that I couldn't find a way to choose the number of colors outside of Save For Web.

I didn't know there was a system where up/downloading files is counted to your total bandwidth if they're over a certain minimum size, which is between 300kB and 1MB

Remember to keep your scanlation files (at least the final .zip) since MD is almost always down and old images rarely load at all.

>I couldn't find a way to choose the number of colors outside of Save For Web.
You do that not in the save dialog, but on the image itself.
Should be Image mode > indexed or pallete or something like that

I always keep everything, raws, cleaned pages, psd files, and fisnished chapters. I know I won't need them, but I can't bring myself to delete anything.

Are you me?

So...
Will the sick mother finally get cured or is she already dead and we just don't know yet?

Same. I know I'll never use my psds again, but they have sentimental value so I can't bring myself to delete them.
That, and they might make as good sample psds for new TSers.

Same. Our group leader deletes semi-frequently so I started hoarding their shit without telling them.

in this case the claim is that the new translation is worse. plus most manga is trash

They do now. And it feels fucking awesome to see your name in the credits.

I'm not going to get tired of asking this, but could you give me some study material to learn Japanese, for free. Although if you want I can be your slave later, not in a sexual way of course.

Why not just torrent some books on thepiratebay or nyaa?
Or do you not have any idea what books to start learning with?

What are the rates, if you don't mind me asking. Read on their page they're asking for at least 200 pages per month.

djtguide.neocities.org/guide.html

Upload a single, 20000 x 20000 PNG as a gook leveling chapter and watch mangadex burn.

and a post on r/manga for maximum effect

Nice try.

Only if you're scrub lord 5000 who's never uploaded anything.

Don't tell me, you're going to use your actuall account for this?or have you prepared a dummy account from before?

If I was going to do it, you bet your ass I'd do it with my own account.

Glad you liked it user

Has anyone tried using Graphics Magick? graphicsmagick.org/

What do you mean? Like the sfx? If so i don’t do Saltiness i do Agnes Kamen

What's an acceptable file size for a regular png page for you, anons?

Looking at the page count for one of the past terms, like a third of translators have less than 200 pages translated, about the same have 500+. The rates are just like in that ANN article.
>ANN has independently confirmed that multiple typesetter were paid 110 yen or €1 per page (approximately US$1), €1.25 per page (US$1.48) for translation, and 14 yen (US$0.13) per page for quality checking. ANN has also confirmed that another typesetter was paid US$1 for every page of an entire book. A typesetter confirmed with ANN that the rate did go up based on difficulty, but was limited to typesetting on color pages.

My regular releases seem to be around 1-2MB per page for 1920px or 2048px pages.

Yeah. Now that I look closely, they're probably hand-drawn. Give the letterer a smooch from me.

Do it under the guise of doing something "useful". So you can compile every solo levelling chapter into one image and post it as as one 'volume'.

What's the issue. I'm only reading hantsu x trash by them and I genuinely do not care if it's less than 50% accurate.

Depends on resolution, "complexity" of the art, and the quality of the scan obviously. If you have standard art, reasonable resolution and a good scan you should be getting them under 1 mb per page. See

>you should be getting them under 1 mb per page
Any tips on getting this done with PS or some compression tool?

Get imgdanke works wonders literally send from god keeps the quality and halves the size

>under 1 mb per page
Why rape the bitdepth for negligible gains?
I say anything under 2MB is fine, 4 for color.

Thanks for the reply! I'll be considering it.

>a new chapter really comes out on April 1st
Oh you bet your ass I'm doing that too.

Like I said it depends. Post a page and we'll be able to tell what to expect.

>Why rape the bitdepth for negligible gains?
Because unless you're doing it the old fashion way the publishers do it for you.

>the publishers do it for you
You're referring to shitty digital raws?
I never saw 4-bit PNG digital raws.
They're usually JPEGs, and you can fix that with waifu2x or topaz or whatever.
It won't look perfect but it'll look better than 4-bit.

The only time when 4-, 2- or 1-bit is acceptable is with ultra high-res halftone scans which really don't have any gradients.

They are translating from the French volume so there's a chance that it already was there

No, but it looks interesting.

It says it's apparently better than imagemagick so thought that you guys might like it

Attached: file.png (1074x571, 101.8K)

proper monster scan when?

Wait, what. You can get most digital raws under 1 mb or just a bit over 1 mb per PNG page without turning them into 4-bit PNGs in my experience. In fact really shouldn't turn them into 4-bit PNGs. Though sometimes you the difference is negligible.

Attached: raw008.jpg (2000x2872, 3.05M)

Sure, *most*. Not all.
It's a bad cut-off. You shouldn't compress a 1.1MB file any further just to fit under 1MB.

>redoing a series that's available just because it's not on MD instead of something new
well that's retarded

Do any of you make money of translating or do you all do it for free?

Here's one caseIf you don't mind reddit links- reddit.com/r/scanlationdrama/comments/iuwuxt/thepaulbunyantrophy_has_deleted_all_of_his/

I'm fairly certain that at least half of the "translators" whose scripts I review are either N3s or MTL frauds

Getting the desirable size is not the problem, I'm just trying to figure out what the fuck is going on. So I tried again using save for web but with stripping its metadata this time and it turned out fine now.
What the fuck did the scanlator put into their releases? A pizza?

Attached: 9.png (1260x1800, 824.12K)

Kek, the original JPG has some photoshop XML metadata shoved in.

Attached: file.png (617x444, 46.78K)

This is a fixed photoshop bug.
They need to update.

Attached: file.png (377x128, 9.84K)

I have a fully cracked 2019 CC suite.
Check out the /w/ Image Modification thread for other cool things you can do.

So, what exactly is causing the bloat like that?

You can use Pinga or Efficient Compression Tool to losslessly strip metadata and recompress PNGs. There's no reason to use jpg in 2021, future proof your releases. Who cares if the chapter is 40mb and not 20mb? 1TB HDDs are like $50 these days.

who knows, some kind of bug
you don't get 4 megabytes of XML any legitimate way

Damn, this seem a lot more work than just knowing jap

I do it for money. It's a legit job, it requires a decent amount of discipline because not everything you do is going to be something you like or feel like working on. But it feels very rewarding.

>Speaking Ching Chong Chin
Just MTL bro

Not if you have people doing the rest of it.

>Or do you not have any idea what books to start learning with?
Exactly that.
Thanks guys, I'll check it out later.

Do I need a college degree to get a job translating manga for any random publisher? I'm an N2 but never went to college

You need a PhD.
One in languages and one in sociology at the very least.

Attached: free.png (423x690, 202.29K)

Having an N2 certificate helps. But what matter the most is experience and a way to demonstrate that you can do the job.

I'm translating a manga that already has a translation and it really is quite a bit of effort.

?

How exaggerated, I would like to believe that this is not fantasy.

No

Do people really care about that? From all I heard, N-ranks mean shit in the real world.

>N2
nigger just go for the N1
if you can translate manga without pulling out a dictionary more than 10 times per chapter, you can get the 50% score on N1 test that you need to pass

only because in the real world, n1 is a minimum requirement.

I posted this a few weeks ago, but I'm serious about getting a translator for this

There are two methods in this file and every single photoshop bubble action created falls into one of those two categories. One uses color range, the other uses magic wand.

I do it for free because money just taints the whole thing.
If you're not doing it out of love for the series you're working on (no matter how small it's gotten by this point), why even bother?

If you have the money to be able to only work on stuff you like, that's great. I just can't bring myself to go back to my old wageslave life of having managers breathe down my neck, so doing translation work for clients at my own pace is far less stressful and I have no other skill I can use for freelance work.

Attached: test.png (423x690, 201.43K)

working for commissioners or official manga licensing companies sounds like... hell on earth, honestly. I'd rather be a wageslave and get paid a living wage. Though that doesn't apply if you're a SEA monkey.

What's SEA?
South East Asia?

I hope this doesn't lost its charm like Komi reportedly did.

It's 23 fucking volumes and ongoing, and the last chapter had a relationship misunderstanding
What do you think?

Can you save font styles in PS for future use?

Not at all. It's become more enjoyable desu.

That's what makes it good. It somehow handles other crap that I can't stand in other romcoms in a charming way.

You can save them as Text Tool presets, if that's what you're asking.

lol

Have fun filling your stomach with integrity

I bet you'll pick it up once you start having to wear glasses too.

What killed the hype?

MTL the first chapter. If it's good eventually someone else will do the rest

The shitty MD community which makes scanlating less rewarding than ever.

don't blame the community, blame the webmasters that create the rules that lead to a shitmunity like that

I've solo scanlated very text heavy doujins, most times in sorry conditions, and in a language that's really not comic-friendly using GIMP. You can definitely do what needs to be done, it's just that photoshop is less of a mess and you can find stuff much more easily. If you put in some extra effort at the start though, GIMP can automate the same things and edit things as fast.

You also need to be able to read FAST for N1 because the volume on the exam is not small.

>not a day later
>completely different group re-typesets your script for yet another series 1:1 with the same raws, while leveling the raws to shit, typesetting worse, and keeping but raping the TL notes

If they want to be re-typesetting masochists that's fine enough, but fug wish they'd at least take some pride in the plagiarism and if not improve it in some aspect, at least not make it worse. >Deebly_goncerned.jpg

Reposting.
I found 5 translated volumes of Yuuyami Tokkoutai by Rensuke Oshikiri in the archive that never got typeset. From the first chapters that seemed like a fun one.

any nigger that reads VNs is fast enough for N1

can you get N1-5 for just reading/comprehension, or do you have to be able to handwrite kanji from memory to pass at all?

You don’t have to write or speak at all

Wait is this fr? I remember seeing that company name with the pic attached. Let me see if I can find more about it.

Attached: file.png (1278x953, 1.24M)

Yeah it's the same company I think. Based on their video, it seems to be some kind of auto MTL+Typesetting tool which they are inviting you to try it out.
video - youtube.com/watch?v=X3gRg6pOXBw

Pfft, nothing can replace TLing and hand-TSing everything yourself.
AI may have conquered the world of boardgames with Go, but that's just peanuts compared to scanlation.

In the meanwhile, I found the paper behind this too. For the smart anons in this thread, here you go arxiv.org/pdf/2012.14271.pdf
Well yeah. This looks like something that can potentially reduce the workload based on the video.

Perhaps more interestingly, they constructed their own dataset including commissioning full translations of five manga series.

Any good tutorials/tips for drawing sfx by hand? I wanna get into that.

Attached: lick.png (700x862, 427.31K)

The quicksandscans tutorials might have something about that.

I asked before but some of these look like real fonts and not just hand drawn, any ideas?

Attached: Screenshot_2021-02-13_15-39-54.png (631x385, 174.59K)

didn't GIMP have content aware fill before PS?

Only these three are most probably fonts, the rest is handwritten. The only thing I can tell you is that the hearts are probably MWHeart font.

Attached: 1613753975217.png (631x385, 212.57K)

So how are these generally made? some sort of drawing tablet?

It's pretty much as simple as getting a decent drawing tablet (I've been using the same old Wacom Bamboo for over a decade) and drawing them on some layer in PS or CSP. Depending on how small your RAWs are, you may also want to apply a sharpen filter or go over with the sharpen tool by hand, because PS AA for their brushes is stupidly blurry.

Some FAKKU manga letterer made a tutorial for making your own font if you're interested in that.
youtube.com/watch?v=6SOOuYneQiw

Another manga letterer made their own donationware brushes recently (they have default mode set to dissolve, so you may want to set it to normal, but up2u).
gumroad.com/l/sarasbrushes

could you get by with drawing on paper and scanning in?

Thanks for the links. I'm using a Huion H950P which is also pretty solid for the price.

I don't see why not. It's more work, but might even look better in the end if you know what you're doing.

On a related note, is there a simple way in PS to achieve something similar to the Isolate Lineart plugin in PaintNet (making all white transparent, including gradients)?
