Is 20 too old to learn how to play a musical instrument?
Music
what did you spend your teenage years doing?
Mostly drawing reading and studying
No. If you want my advice, guitar would be one of the harder ones to learn well. You could get respectable at piano or pretty fucking good at bass or drums.
Ty for the advice user!
Piano? Piano is best learned young. Guitar would be a fine instrument to start on. I started when I was 15-16. That’s only a 4-5 year difference. Bass is a good suggestion but best played with an ensemble. OP just learn guitar. Buy a nylon string guitar, learn classical style (maybe skip learning to read music, focus on clean technique), then switch to electric guitar and shred
guitar is easier than piano but bass and drums are underrated
Drums and piano requires way more muscle coordination to play well. Learn guitar.
bass is good tho
In my experience learning both, guitar was harder because it's a more obtuse instrument to play physically. However I did start piano when I was very young. I personally think piano is the best place to start when learning instruments because at least knowing basic shit on it (like understanding chords and scales) will help you understand and learn other instruments much faster.
Unfortunately it’s shit advice. Piano generally has a much more dedicated pool of musicians that truly study the instrument, whereas most guitar players, even in succesful bands, are nothing to mention.
But yes, you can learn an instrument, and you can get really good at it too. Piano is the more musically enlightening one to learn
Thank you everyone I think I’m gonna learn bass and ukulele
Why should guitar be more suitable to learning at an older age? That is nonsense
Please don’t learn memeulele, it was cute two decades ago, now it’s just cursed. You will ruin your musicality and charisma permanently
Its small and easy to carry around, girls love it and it has such a sweet sound
I am not going to lie man uke is a meme. Just learn acoustic guitar instead. Women do not like uke as much as you think they do, and they really just think it's cute, not hot. That's just my experience though. Acoustic guitar is prettier, more impressive, still pretty easy to carry around to places and play, and not too difficult to learn to play at an average skill level (open and bar chords).
some people pick up the violin at 60
Ive tried to teach myself how to play guitar but I suck... Chords can be confusing, my fingertips hurt and I get discouraged all the time. Guitar is pretty easy Im simply retarded thats it
You can do it if you try. The fingertip stuff literally just requires a few months of consistent practice to get over. As for understanding chords better, learning at least basic chords on piano will help you understand the concept of chords better and help you understand how they work on guitar better. However, if you can learn a G chord, an A chord, a D chord, and an E chord (all of which are no kidding easy enough for a todler to be able to do them, seriously no matter your skill level you can do these) you open yourself up to being able to play a fuckload. From there, you can also already play E minor, since it's just removing a finger, A minor, since it's just moving a shape you already know, and D minor, since again it's just moving one finger. If you can do this, to 90% of people you will be indistinguishable to someone who really knows what they are dong to 90% of people. Either way user, good luck.
Thank you so so much user, youre such a kind person (unironically)
No problem user. Remember, if you learn electric, you can just play power chords and be fine, which is one shape that can get you almost any sound at the cost of arm fatigue.
20 is most definitely NOT too old to learn how to play an instrument. yes, the uke may be a meme instrument but if you have a desire to learn how to play it then do so. the bass is an excellent instrument to learn as well and a good bass player is baller as hell. dont be afraid to suck at playing at first (almost everyone does), and dont be afraid of taking a break from playing if it gets tedious as you can always go back to it. I have never posted or replied to anything on this site before but DAMN do i love music and if anyone has an inclination to learn anything musical then i would fully encourage them to do so
Ukulele is a meme but they're fun to shred on at parties. I've played bass off and on for about 15 years. If you're just looking to dick around and jam out solo or in a garage band it's pretty easy to pick up and play the tabs for your favorite songs. If you want to make some cash off of it you'll have to do your homework on music theory, ear training (start this asap either way), locking in with the drummer (a solid drummer is a rare gift from the heavens) and learn that sometimes playing less is better.
Bass is a bastard child of both the rhythm and melody sections- it's the musical foundation of the song but it's also part of what sets the groove and feel of it along with the percussion/drums. You have to be musically tight with the drummer AND keep up with the other instruments at the same time. So while physically it's easy with mostly one note at a time, there's a lot of technical knowledge required to not suck. And if you're in it for the girls, I've yet to be approached by one after a gig.
All that said, it's a fun instrument, especially when you venture into the slapping and popping world and unlock a whole second set of sounds you can make.
No, 18 is when people peak at math and the two, math and music, are highly related. So your in the prime of your life to learn to play good enought for a small gathering or to impress a loved one. You got this!
No? What are you fucking retarded? Jesus Christ. Pick up a fucking instrument and start playing ffs. You're still young.
Real question is who cares? Who cares that you can play an instrument? No one in your life will care
Matt Skiba from Blink was 20 when he started guitar. Nikolai Fraiture from the Strokes was 19 when he started bass. There you go user
