do you use linux, robot?
why or why not?
Do you use linux, robot?
No since I'm used to Windows and the benefits from using Linux don't interest me enough to learn how it works.
That and it still ain't the best for vidya.
Yes. I have a Chromebook. I wish that I didn't have a Chromebook, but I do and I'm not dropping money on an actual computer. The only way to do anything that isn't in-browser stuff is to run a linux vm.
I switched over in 2015 after I saw that Windows 10 was doubling down on all the shitty stuff in Windows 8 and adding even more shitty stuff, I knew that I couldn't stay on 7 indefinitely so I got off my ass and started moving over. Linux is full of obnoxious things too but at least you can usually change them if you care enough.
I game on it, because theres just no way in goddamned hell that W10 is going on any of my machines and if there's some games that I can't get running in Wine or Proton then so be it. the situation on that front has gotten a lot better in the past few years though. I still have a W7 install on that machine but I can't remember the last time I booted into it.
Yes, specifically Debian with CDE.
there isn't a way to hack the chromebook and free the bootloader so you can get linux on it?
Debianchad here, it's the patrician choice
how did you end up with a memebook?
Oh yeah, gaming on linux has gotten a lot better, I know. But still, there's no real incentive for me to switch, I know Linux is better but eh. The stuff that bugs people about win 10, I don't much care for either.
>Debian
You fucking donkeys. Step off.
>do you use linux, robot?
No
>why or why not?
Because it sucks
arch is based but your desktop isnt.
I use arch, but mostly to test games with proton for a friend. Learning arch is a good and interesting experience
Contrarian Desktop Environment
yeah i'm using linux mint
hassle free, didn't have to go through any trouble, shit just works. i like it.
Yes I use linux
Because it's more comfortable and customizable than windows not to say better
And mac is the worst of all
Also becayse it respects my freedoms
To lazy to fix it. Honestly everything i do works in linux. And programing shit and stuff like that works bettet.
i'm gonna switch to linux on my laptop as soon as i finish building my desktop
Ubuntu is the only distro I've ever used that doesn't have trash font rendering out of the box. That and I don't have the time or energy to troubleshoot small fixes to thinks I fucking hate, like the file picker not having properly sized thumbnails. My time is valuable, I have work to do, I'm not going to repeatedly spend an hour to fix small gripes.
t. W10 + WSL2
>My time is valuable, I have work to do
says the guy spending his evening on Dab Forums
I've used Linux for years. But there's ultimately not much point in using it if you're not either a programmer or (at the opposite end of the spectrum) an elderly Grandma who thinks computers are their Facebook and solitaire machine. It's not like even most people who work in software development are ever going to actually edit the fucking code of the programs their OS consists of, so software freedom is genuinely worthless for most people, even if it's very important ideologically speaking.

Stayed because I just like it more than windows
love linux bash is so useful
No I have an
Switched because windows performed like shit on my craptop. Stayes after upgrading my hardware because I like it. Very /comfy/ to have control over my computer. Also muh freedoms.
I used ubuntu to complete the python track on exercism. That's about it. I mostly use Windows bc Photoshop and Steam. Also probably just out of habit.
Yes, on my laptop. I also do Linux stuff at work.
im already pushing the limits of my mac mini when i run boot camp on it
i dont think ill ever be able to use linux
I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!
and yes, I do use GNU+Linux, Gentoo GNU+Linux.
how could you tell?
>gaming on linux has gotten a lot better
is there a compatibility layer for DX11 yet or?
Wanted to play Nier:Automata but it requires DX11 to run.
it is already linux
gentoo based of all things, uses portage
debian testing with cinnamon here
Void linux woo woo
Debian testng GNOOOMER here
got a dual boot of a crippled w10 and popos
popos was kind of buggy on this laptop but it was a pretty pleasant experience overall i have to say and it did allow the laptop to run a lot cooler
i guess i needed a bit more on the gaming side of things than i did productivity i fucked around with wine and proton but could never get things running quite right if i was doing strictly productivity stuff and browsing though without a doubt
i hope i can stop using windows soon
I tried to dual boot fedora with windows 10 and fucked up my MBR and had to use diskpart to re format my ssd. shit was annoying. I want to dual boot so I have the option of which to use but its a bitch getting it not to override windows. Apparently it has something to do with the shit tier anaconda installer for fedora. Don't know why it isn't simple like Ubuntu's is.
I use my laptop rompirate comics and music. And then put said comics on my tablet to read and the music on my Walkman to listen to.
Why would I want Linux if I'm not a virgin fa/g/
Plus most of the games I play are old windows games.
i use ubuntu and fucking despise it
i use it too, but i love it. why not using something else, when you hate it?
Ubuntu
I like that I can install basically everything from repositories and the whole thing is very comfy to work with (bash, pip, conda, etc.).
I use a virtual win10 for office (libreoffice sucks balls unfortunately)
Yes, on my laptop/server, and some VMs, because it's often quicker and easier than getting things set up on Windows.
I still have Windows (for Workstations bc I'm 1337 mwtb;dltr) on my desktop due to drivers for my GPU and sound card.
Arch with VM windows + GPU passthrough. Pretty much fulfills all my needs
This guy gets it. Windows is not a very good daily driver unless you are into reinstalling every now and then, but in a VM it works perfectly and it's easy to restore to it's old state.
I use a mid 2011 iMac for my daily browsing, though I do own a relatively new Thinkpad that runs Linux Mint with XFCE on it. It plays nice with the eGPU (GTX 1080) I have, but I haven't figured out how to make a Windows VM with eGPU passthrough, if it's even possible.
Has better fonts by default, it's a better experience to browse internets in Ubuntu than Windows, but also drivers are kinda fucked up and can easily get broken by a minor security update. Also has some nice default applications for media which are not available for Windows. If you care a lot about games, you can use BOTH Windows and Linux via dual boot.
Can you play vidya in VM with GPU passthrough?
I have an ubuntu computer that I use for the internet, and a windows laptop that I use for vidya, and eventually university work
Fedora seves my daily needs well enough and it doesn't revert my preferences or install bloat with random updates like Win10.
Don't install 2 OSes on the same drive and you won't have a problem.
I had GPU passthrough set up, but realised it was pointless unless you for some reason need to run both OSes at the same time.
Yes. That's pretty much the entire point.
>Better fonts
Are you buying a computer for fucking fonts?
And if you're buying a computer to (specifically) browse through websites, means you shouldn't buy a computer at all
This post was very
This is weird argumentation. We have A and B which are both suitable for most things, we are comparing the differences between A and B highlighting things important to us which may help to choose one over the other.
Normalfag Windows users should be banned from the internet. The Internet should be harder to access like back in the 90's. That way we would get rid of tiktok, social media and all that other cancerous bs.
No one is forcing you to use social media and no one is preventing you from using .onion sites exclusively.
Windows does this shit purposely.
I had a Fedora / Win10 install that was working FLAWLESSLY until some Windows update royally fucked everything up and it couldn't boot either.
Of course using the *Windows* repair tool did nothing and told me to reinstall. It's your fault dummy, now fix it.
Thankfully any liveboot image of linux lets you do whatever you want so after like 3 commands repairing GRUB it was good to go.
Basically what I'm saying is Windows will literally have crab mentality when fighting over boot record. Never update Win10 and I suggest you either just run a Win10 VM on your Linux machine or get a separate harddrive to isolate it. It's literally a virus.
>muh videogaymes
Not everyone is a normalfag who is fine with the reality in which they live in, some want to escape.
i am fine with the reality in which i live in even though i never had a gf and i don't want one anymore. i am not that big of a faggot to want to escape reality
i am replying to this
That's very cool, good for you!
Yeah.
It's comfy to use, runs well, and looks good.
